Go for it you will not regret a 270 for deer. In fact I and many others have taken larger game with a 270, while it might not give you the best in that category it can be very effective with the right bullet and limitations put in place. I would suggest starting with 130 gr, I don't like corelokts but if you want give them a go. I personally prefer Ballstic Tip bullets in my 270 for deer, but anything from 130-150 grains will get the job done. Just shoot the one that suits the situation and your rifle best.

Can't comment on the gun as I have no experience with it.

I have owned a .270 for as long as I can remember deer hunting and have taken deer at 300 yrds also (but i dont care to make that kind of shot ) You will not regret getting this calibur it will serve you well. I also have a .270 wsm and love it too. Its just alittle bump ahead of the .270 win.

I have used the combination you mentioned in your opening post for a number of years(.270 Winchester Model 70 with Corelokts) also a Marlin MR7 in .270 both shoot corelokts very well. I have never lost a deer with that combination.

I had three 270 rifles at one time. The Remington Pump, a 700 BDL and an old Western Field which I think Montgomery Ward sold.

The 270 is a superb caliber that will not only handle deer, but other stuff as well. When I lived in Alaska (73'-76'), I had a Ruger 77 (tang safety). That ole 270 accounted for a moose, a dall sheep, and 7 caribou. You won't find a better caliber for the deer in your state (IMO).
Good Hunting,
Hal

Another thumbs-up for the 270.

Just don't use the Corelokts, IMO they are one of the worst preforming bullets are the market today. They're cheap for a reason. If you want inexpensive ammo check out Winchester Power Points or Federals Classic line of ammo. Prices are similar to that Remington junk ammo and performance is better. In a 270, I use the Federal's loaded with 130gr Nosler Ballistic Tip.

Barnes x bullet by federal premium. If you don't reload, this is a good alternative. Federal premiums are close to handload performance. It is about thirty dollars a box.;)
