RE: Old or new 300
Hi Bowshooter48,
The .300 Savage, which very closely resembles a .308 Winchester both in appearance and performance, was originated for use in the lever action Savage Model 99. The .300 Savage was designed to approxiamte the ballistics of the .30-06. And while it didn't quite achieve that it was a significant improvement over it's main competitor the .30-30 Winchester. You could kind of think of it as the original short action performance cartridge.
A very good article on the .300 Savage can be found here:

Hope this helps!

I believe the .300 Savage was the chambering in Remington's "classic" for 2003 and as I recall, brass for that cartridge was in short supply.
If you found enough to make up an entire box or nearly so hold on to them...they'll be worth $1 each soon!!

When first developed, the .300 savage did indeed equal the .30/'06 - of that day, the G.I. 1906 load that used a 150-grain FMJ spitzer @ 2700 FPS. Now, they've slowed the .300 150-grain down to somewhere in the 2600's.
The 7.62mm NATO (.308 Win.) was actually derived from the .,300 Savage, in that the Army wanted a short round that would be better suited for automatic arms. During the course of developing such a round, part of which involved mesing with the .300 Savage, they discovered that the G.I. M2 ball round that used IMR 4895 had about a half-inch of air space in it because the arsenals weren't loading to 100 % density. So they cut off the extra half-inch, renecked the case, and "voila!!" the .308 Win.!!

300 savage ammo runs about $14.99 a box at Cabelas . There was at least twenty of the old savage model 99 in 300 Savage for sale at the last gunshow I was at . There are a lot of them around , just not very popular anymore . Most shooters want the 308 or the 243 win .

Midway still has new brass for the 250 and 300 Savage. I just got some a few months ago. I picked one of those remington classics on 300 Savages up a while back. Midway USA.
