.30-30 or .35 rem
I already have a .270 but am looking for a short range brush gun for deer under 100 yards. I am leaning towards a new marlin 336 in .30-30 but was wondering if .35 rem is better or another cartridge that I should consider. Thanks

Go to www.marlinfirearms.com They will give all the info you need. The difference between a 30/30 and a .35? Why did you choose the .270 over the .30/06? One shoots a heavier bullet, the other shoots a little flatter.

I have a 270 and a 35.
I bought a 270 cause I shot my first deer with a borrowed 270. Liked it. And it is a sweet flat accurate shooter.
A friend sold me the 35 for 100 bucks....powerful bullet...knocks them down!
Go with the Marlin 35...you won' t regret it.

If you don' t reload then I' d lean toward the .30-30. Ammo is so cheap you can do plenty of shooting. You could also consider a real big bore. As far as performance between the 35 and the .30-30, I doubt you' ll see any real difference.

Actually from what I have read the 30-30 actually kills deer a little better, but where the .35 sets itself apart is on larger game. I honestly don' t think the deer will know the difference though if you do your job. I have both, an old Savage pump 30-30 and a Marlin .35 and I don' t think either doe I have shot w/ them would have known the difference. If you need something for the brush, why don' t you look at the 45-70 or .450 Marlin or load up a shotgun w/ slugs. They are true brush busters within 100 yards.

drh1175..
what are you expecting to take with this " brush gun " ? i have friends up in maine who only use a 35rem great out to 150yds using a 200gr. bullet. seen many first hand drop in there tracks.
the 30-30win is a nice caliber i have owned both in my time of hunting. but if i had to get another lever action it would be another 35rem. also a great black bear getter aswell.
ammo for the 35rem is not as abundant but still can be found at most wal-marts and bigg gun stores. rem makes a 150gr. and 200gr. core-lok' t. federal makes a federal classic in 200gr. winchester makes a 200gr. aswell.
i would stay with the 200gr.
MHO would to stay away from the 450marlin just beuase i just got rid of mine. it kicks like a mule and i think it is made for people that hunt dangerous animals like bear or just t take out other larger game. the ammo is going for $35.00 a box for the 350gr. hornday bullets. plus the trigger was so bad i could not get under 4" groups at 50yds using a lyman peep sight.
the 45-70 i have heard drops them dead, but ammo is harder to find than the 35rem ( well atleast in the north east ).
you might want to look at something in the middle....... 444marlin. 240gr. bullet is enough medicine for deer.
but i would say go with either the
#1 .35rem with 200gr.
#2 .30-30win 170gr.
#3 45-70 300gr.
