Default HVR vs Calvin Elite trigger

I need another trigger for a medium game hunting rifle and am torn between the Timney Calvin Elite (CE) and the Jewell HVR. I would like to try the CE but it has a maximum weight of 2.5 pounds. The good old HVR with the right spring has a maximum weight of 3.0 pounds.

I like a trigger that is three pounds or less but no lighter than 2.5 pounds in most medium game rifles. I do like a three to three and a half pounds in a heavier game rifle, half of that in a varmint rifle, and just a few ounces in a target rifle.

The CE is a not quite as costly as the HVR and I have been looking for an excuse to try one, but the pull weight range bothers me a bit. As of now it looks like the HVR is more suited for me but this simple decision is giving me vapor lock.

I haven’t test driven a Calvin Elite enough yet to decide, but a few guys I know through PRS type Competition shoot them and love them. Alternatively, one nationally ranked competitor I know had one for 3 days and bailed on it - he shoots Triggertech Diamonds.

I’m a big fan of the HVR, and a big fan of the Diamond. I’m shooting a match with a guy next weekend, supposed to be squadded together, planning to test drive his CE. I’ll let you know what I think after having some time shooting it. I know it needs to be epic strides nicer feeling than the Timney 510 for me to buy one.

I forgot to add this disclaimer:

About 2-3yrs ago, I committed to sub 1lb triggers in every rifle I can get them in. I’ve been going through my AR’s even to get them down under 2lbs even on 2 stage triggers. I sprung my HVR’s down to 1/2-1 1/2lbs. Naturally, many, many of my firearms can’t be made to break below 1lb, but if I can get there, I do. It’s bad enough for me now, even with a Geissele 2 stage, I’m bothered by a 4.5lb service rifle requirement.

Without question, that colors me with a pretty heavy bias regarding trigger quality. Crispness, consistency, and travel at both ends are all important aspects, but there are a lot of triggers out there pretty good in these aspects. Weight, while retaining security and positive tactile feel is very important to me.

It ain’t good for everybody, and I’m not saying anyone else should change their hunting rifles to an 8oz trigger, but it’s a bias I have.

It sounds likr what you are looking for Big Uncle is a regular Timney trigger. I believe they go down to 2.5lbs and up to 5 or 6. I had one on an old Mauser 96 and it was great. Check them out on the Timney web site. The Elite is meant more as a target trigger I have one on my Rem 700 22-250 and it is great came set at 8 ounces.

I am very familiar with Timney triggers and have a fair few rifles with the 510 model. The 510 is very good but for this purpose I want something just a little bit different and slightly better. I like to change the pull weights on triggers to suit the intended use and user and sometimes this particular trigger will be set at 2.75 pounds, other times it may well be set much lighter.

This time it looks like I will go with the HVR but I still want to try the CE, just on a different rifle.
