Actually ALF I had a difficult time deciding between the two rounds. I chose the 338 because of bullet selection and slightly better BC. I am sort of tired of losing so much meat, even with the 3006 it is hard not to destroy alot. Bullets of this caliber are of sturdier construction so I hope to help some of the problem. I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with say the Nosler 200 gr. Bal. Tip. or even the 180 for that matter.

I have used the 225 gr and the 250 gr. Deer get slammed to the ground, and elk tip over. I have found that meat damage is less than using a 300 mag.

Would use the 210grain Nosler Partition at around 2700-2800 feet per second.

Jesse, Ive been hunting with the 338/06 since 1988, I currently use 200 gr nosler ballistic tips because they are so accurate in my rifle. I wont use these bullets in any other caliber because they blow up so bad, but the 338 ballistic tips have a thicker jacket and dont fly apart like the smaller caliber ones do. I have killed deer with 160 barnes x, 175 barnes x, 225 barnes x, 180 ballistic tips, and 250 sierra. Also shot an elk with a 250 sierra. The best killing bullet I have ever seen was the old design 175 gr barnes x. Some of the kills I have seen with this bullet are uncanny, its like they were electrocuted, seriously, I have seen deer drop straight to the ground with their legs folded under them. Never even twitch! But since barnes changed their disign in 1996, I cant get them to shoot better than about 3" now in my gun. I have shot some 5 shot groups with the ballistic tips that are close to 1/2", so I use them now. My load is 57.5 gr of H-380 which gives me 2710 at the muzzle. I can shoot it at almost 2900 without any trouble, but the accuracy is better at 2700 and the recoil is noticably less too. Try those 175 x bullets if you can get them to shoot good enough, they work great. Any 338 bullet you can buy will work fine on a deer though.

Thanks Larry,

I can't get an X bullet to shoot in any gun period. I have tried several powders, played with seating depth and other things. The subject guns shoot lights out with conventional bullets. Thanks for the opinions.
