Default Wolf season open, what gun to use?

So Idaho has once again opned season of Mr. Wolf and I though I would see what opinions are on what would be an appropriate caliber to use on Mr. Wolf.

A deer rifle would do the trick no problem, but how about varmit calibers such as 223 and 22-250? Shots may be at some distance and Mr. Wolf can reach 150# live weight.

Minimum IMO would be .243 Win. with 75 gr. V-Max.

I'll be out there next week for a 10 day hunt, I'm bringing my .270 WSM with 130 grain bullet, gun sighted in at 200 yards and set to shoot out to 500 yards.

Wolves are basically a bit smaller than whitetail deer, at least compared to the ones in Wisconsin. Anything you use to kill a mule/whitetail deer is enough for a wolf.

I will be using my 223, wolves are thin skined and are easily killed, a 22 mag will effectively do the job but does not offer the range of a 223.

I'd probably take a .270win.

Walking around grizz country may have you thinking twice about a .223

Not really, we have grizzlys here too. That is why I always pack a 44 mag. If you get charged by a grizz, that 270 rifle isnt going to do you much good, you probably wont have time to get a shot off with a rifle. I got charged and attacked by a black bear earlier this year and didnt even have time to get my 44 out of the holster.

Considering that Bear season is also open I may opt for the Rem 600 in 308 or a Lone Eagle pistol also in 308. I don't think I want to go after bear with a 223. The only reason I was considering a smaller caliber was to limit pelt damage. I've shot coyote with a 270 Win before and it really made a mess. One broadside shot left an exit wound the size of my hand, another a head shot blew the whole top of the head off but that was like only a 50 yd shot.
