Default question about shooting groups

OK, newbie question here: when people talk about shooting 1", 2" groups, etc., what position are they referring to? Benchrest? Prone? Kneeling? I would find it hard to get tight groups from any of the less stable positions.

Most internet hero shooters shoot off the bench. How else could one ever expect to shoot "one ragged hole" at 1500 yards? LOL

usually most of us are at the range, sittin at a bench, with a sled or some sand bags, tryin to get a good zero. if yer trying to shoot standing up, i wouldnt be adjustin your scope.

Shooting from a bench/prone while dialing in is when you measure groups...not standing, kneeling or while doing a drive by!

The value of sandbags, sleds, or even bipods at the range is found in being able to isolate out many (but not all) shooter-induced errors. Of course, the downside to their use is that it becomes less possible for shooters to blame their poor form or technique on the rifle and not on themselves as they should.

If you want to know what your rifle is capable of, shoot it properly sandbagged or from a benchrest. If you want to know what you're capable of, sight it in from said sandbagged or benchrest position and then see how well you do from prone, sitting, kneeling, and offhand positions. If the truth hurts, consider it an excuse to practice more!
