I am realitively new here. I have an opinion question. which caliber would you prefer for all around use? taking in consideration all aspects ammo prices,recoil,distance,terminal performance. When I say all around use I'm talking about whitetail deer hog varmints. thank you in advance!! shoot safely and often!!!!!

Ammo availability makes the 270 the winner all day. You can walk into any store that sells ammo and should be able to find some for a 270 while the same can't be said for the 25-06. Performance wise I doubt you or the game would notice any difference between the two. Both catridges make excellent flat shooting deer rifles.

Only covering the animals you listed I would go with the 25-06. If you were to want to hunt Elk I would then choose the 270. Even Wal-Mart at least in my area has 25-06 ammo in the Remington Core-Lokt. I would use 110-120 gr. ammo on deer & hogs and use the 85 gr. loads available on varmints. I love the 25-06 and have used one for many years. I handload but if you don't there are loads for the 06 that cover all the animals you listed. If you want one load for everything you could go with the 100 gr. Barnes TSX loaded by Federal if your rifle shoots the load well enough. In the end you can't really go wrong with either caliber but there aren't any varmint loads available in factory ammo for the 270 that I'm aware of.

2506 hands down. I don't have any problems with someone using it for elk or moose either with a good bullet. Bangflop every time.

If it was me I'd go with the .270 out of those 2 choices. There's not much difference between the 2 but ammo availability makes the .270 the winner in my book.

I have never shot a 270, so my opinion will be biased. Here is what I do know. As mentioned, factory ammo may not be available every where you go. I really like my 25/06. It is a shooter. Recoil is easy. My wife uses it when she hunts. She perfers it over my 243. She wouldnt use the 06 if it had much recoil. I have always had pass thrus. They normally run a short distance but leave a good bloodtrail. I use either Hornady 117 gr soft points or Sierra 117 gr loaded by Federal. My gun does not like Nosler Balistic Tips.

Depending on where you live, the cost of 25-06 ammo can be quite a bit higher than .270 Win. If you reload, this is not as much of an issue. As stated above, the .270 Win is easier to find on the shelf in stores.

It is possible you will have more meat loss with the 25-06 vs. the .270 Win. However, if you take a double lung shot (as you would with a bow) instead of a shoulder shot the possible extra meat loss is not a factor. See if you can fire a deer round in each caliber from the same model of rifle to see which you like better (try to have the optics and rifle the same for an apples to apples comparison).

My vote is the 270 even if you buy factory or reload. It just out does the 25-06 after 350yds. The 270 and 280 are the most ideal cal. for deer.

Availability is not an issue.You can have any local shop order it,buy online or have one of the custom reloading services make it up for you.If anyone can't find ammo within a matter of a few days especially so for either of these two very popular cals that person is a ...Deleted by CalHunter...
