You want to keep at least 1500 ft lbs of force at the point of impact and a 30-30 Winchester barely has that at the barrel.

Bullet drift in a stiff wind might be as much as 20 inches.

Some read and look at charts, some go by past experience...I've owned one centerfire rifle since 1980, a Ruger M-77 in .243...With it I have killed over 200 deer, many at 300 + yards....I've also killed several black bears, a ton of groundhogs, crows, beavers, coyotes, wild dogs, foxes and other varmits that needed killing...

Now, what have you killed with a .243???

Neither I nor the millions of deer killed by 30-30's were aware that the 30-30 was barely capable of killing deer at point blank ranges!!!
