IMHO the 300 Win Mag would be the choice. It is a fine all round chambering. I find the 338 Win Mag a very "snotty" round. For what one gains over the 300 I don't believe the punishment is worth it. It's a round that kills on both ends of the rife. If you need more that what the 300 offers I'd rather move up to my 375 H&H which to me is morecomfortable to shoot than the 338. That being said the new 338 fed and rugers are interesting without the punishment of the 338win mag

I've been eyeing up one of those 300 WSM, they look real nice. Expensive as all hell for ammo though

"Whether or not the .338 Magnum is actually a better elk and moose cartridge than the .300 Magnums, or even the 7mm Magnums, will long be debated, but when large carnivorous game becomes the topic of conversation all such arguments quickly end."

Now, I also own a 7MM Rem Mag so my .338 is my high end.

Of the two, for general purpose, I'd 300....though I've got the trusty 7mmRM, and if I were to go big, I'd mean it.

Voted for the 300WM, as I don't have a .338 to compare to. I've been thinking of picking up a .325WSM Model 70 Extreme Weather though. Would make a great gun for Alaska, I'm thinking...

The .338 is like a grown ups .30-06, it's a great all around, great elk/moose rifle especially in griz country.

get a .340 Wby.

I swear my .340wby kicks a tad less than my .300win.mag., but sure both kick.

I'm assuming you have a .300 RUM? or just liked the sn?

If so I'd add a little variety, ie a .338 vs. another .300
