I bought a new 700 ADL in 22-250. It has a synthetic stock and cost under 400.00. It is very accurate.it will group under an inch every time and often within 1/2 inch. It likes 60 grain Hornady bullets at about 3400 fps best. I adjusted the trigger which was a bit heavy. I have a Bushnell 4x12x40 scope on it.

The 22-250 is screamin fast. If the varment is looking at your trigger finger and playing chicken with you, the bullet will hit him before he can see your finger move.

You might try the .224 Plummer if you are into loading. 50 grain slugs at 4589 FPS in my rifle and best three shot group measuring .367" at 100 yards. It makes a wood chuck look like you put it in a blender and poured it out. Barrel life is not the greatest, around 1500 rounds and groups start to open up but you just set it back a turn and start again.

It does after about 1500 rounds you set the barrel back a turn. In some respects the Plummer remindes me of the old 30-30. .30 cal and 30 grains of powder, well the best load for the Plummer with a 50 grain bullet is 50 grains of 4064 and a 50grain bullet. the 50-50-.224 Sounds like one of the old black powder cartridges, sort of.

I should have known that the lowly 22-250 would never cut it as a Chuck gun. Sorry I enen suggested it. Just as well trash all the factory available rifles.

Geez James, different strokes for different folks.Thats what makes this hunting and shooting sport so varied and so much fun.It would be boring indeed if we all chose to hunt with the same caliber huh?Just cause someone likes a different caliber than you don' t make them wrong...............just makes their choice different than yours.Wildcats can be a lot of fun as well as factory rounds(the 22-250 was a wildcat for years before Remington made it a factory cartridge)I say whatever floats your boat

Like I said before there are some things that people like James will never understand. By the way that Bushnel scope could be some of the reasom for that 700s inconsistant accuracy.

Now as to wildcats. Bet you got more then one!!! Lets see what factory rounds started as wildcats, Hmmmm. The 250 Savage gave rise to 22-250, it used to be the 22 Varmiter untill introduced by Winchester. On the same case we have the .243 Win. Ex wildcats such as .25/06 .270 .280 Rem and .35 Whalan all based on the 3006 case.
7mm08, 260 Rem. and a few others came from the .308. Just a few more, 7mm Mashburn now is called the 7mm Rem Mag. Actually when you come right down to it anything with a belt owes it parentage to the good old 300 H&H and the 375 H&H. When you come right down to it there are hardly any cartridges out there that the big companies did beg borrow or steal from the Wildcaters. Look at the 7mm STW for example.
You know maby you should be thankful for the tinkers out there with out them you would not have your 22-250 and maby nothing to bitch about, but I doubt it.
Have a nice day and yes .22-250 is an excelent cartridge, I never said it wasn' t. 220 Swift, another Wildcat also is good for chucks.

Now James do not get your panties in a bunch, sure the the .224 Plummer is a fantastic cartridge but you do not have to throw out your rifle. 22-250 is a good caliber and since you do not apparently hand load or know how to work up loads stick with it. For out of the box chuck popping not much beats it other then the .220 Swift. If you ever get into loading and load development you can always rechamber the .22-250 for the Plummer, or the Middlestead, or the A.I. or a bunch more.
For the shooter that does not get into playing around with reloading there is little better then the .22-250 when you take into account ammo availibility and such.
