Check out the Ruger Mini 14. Great little semi-auto. In my opinion they are 100 times more reliable than a AR-15. They are made to shoot people size targets not prarie dogs. However, the newer models are very accurate.

Why mil spec ammo? There are plenty of low cost .223 loads available.FYI-true mil spec ammo has the primers crimped in place. If you want to save money reloading is the way to go but with mil spec you'll also need to remove the crimp to do so.Some rifles can shoot both .223/5.56 some cant.

save up, find the money for an ar-15.
does the browning BAR come in a .223? pretty sure it would come in a .243.
Always thought a big clip for the BAR would be cool, like a 10round or more...maybe they exist...
I think the BAR holds 4 or 5 rounds of .270, maybe get a used one?

check out www.centerfiresystems.com have some good deals on military style rifles and ammo. Not sure exactly what your are looking for but there are some lower priced semi-auto firearms on here. You can get "Doublestar" Ar's in the $700's. I would buy 3 more AR's instead of another Mini-14. I had one a few years back and couldn't get rid of it quick enough. Trigger was horrible and the accuracy was worse. Maybe they are better now but I def. lost some money on that trade in.
They have the Saiga IZ-114 in 223 in there for $325. I have never owned a Saiga but its only $325-if you are just looking for something inexpensive to buy on page 23-24
