Troy R,
I' d sell the 270 if I bought the 7mm RUM. In the GRAND scheme of things between 22LR and 50 BMG -- those two, for all practical purposes are too close to being the same thing. Spacing out your calibers/cartridges lets you build a rack of rifles that can handle a wider array of game.

No way on God' s green earth I' m selling my .270.
I' ve debated 7mm Rem Mags and all the rest... I' ve decided my next gun purchase is definitely .300-.338 range. With that, I' ll have a ' jack of my favorite trades' arsenal - 12 gauge, .270, .50 cal muzzleloader, and the .300-.338 (probably .338). I don' t shoot groundhogs or anything of that sort, so I don' t really need any more rifles than that.
Need.
Then, a bow... maybe after that I' ll start thinking swamp guns or something of that nature. We' ll see.
Heck, I' m still only 22, after all. I' ve got plenty of time.

My dad has a Ruger M77 7mm mag for Elk. He put a nice little break on the front and it has very little felt recoil now. The nice thing is that he can find factory ammo that will work good for elk and then he uses 139 gr sp for deer, even less recoil.

If you want to get beat to death for little in the way for return the 7 mm Ultra Mag is a good choice! you get a hole lot more bang and punch on the down range end of things if you go for somthing like the .340 Weatherby, and I am not a Weatherby fan but the 7 Ultra is like a 200 mile per hour VW bug. Light and fast but it don' got what it takes to make the show down!!!!!!!

7mm Ultra mag? Show me one factory, (as in Remington) that will shoot accuartely! Rem runs something like a 1 in 9 twist, way to fast for the velosities you can push the Ultra to. With 1 in 9 you better stick to being beat to death with 140 grain slugs at twice the recoil of the 7mm S.T.W. for about 100 F.P.S. gain. or go to 175 grain bullets at around 3450 which would be good for Elk. But if I want to subject myself to that type of recoil, which you can learn to deal with the I would go for a more substancial bullet , somthing in the .338 or .358 relm.

I am with BigBulls on this one. I have used my 270 everytime I went elk hunting during rifle season that is. Have only had to shoot more than once, but that was MY fault not the caliber. It wouldn' t have mattered if it were a .35 cal. I have never had to track one either, they have all fallen within sight.
