Default Auto in .308 or 30-06

I am looking for a new type on deer rifle. I am having trouble deciding between a .308 and 30-06 it will be my primary deer rifle. I got a lot of .30 cal bullets for reloading my 30-30. I need advice on deciding which cal. to choose, I haven't realy hunted with anything over 30-30. I am leaning towards a Remington

A .308 is a good deer gun, but myself i have a Remington Woodsmaster in .30-06, it has alot more smack down power, and is also a good gun for if you want to hunt larger game, dont get me wrong a .308 is plenty of gun for deer, but myself i prefer the stopping power of a .30-06, hope you find a good gun!

You're splitting hairs. Inside of 300 yards they are basically the same.

If you think recoil might be an issue get the .308.

Ask yourself one question, do you anticipate hunting anything larger than deer? If so then go 30-06, if not 308.

Basically for either caliber the two major players out there are the Remington 7400 and the Browning BAR. They also had the older Remington 742 which I've not read very good things about at all. Between the BAR and the 7400 in most cases the BAR seems to be the clear winner.

If you are handloading, the 30-06 will do everything the 308 will and can be pushed to significantly higher performance levels. You pay with recoil as you pas 308-strength loads and it uses a longer action.

I am an 06 fan but if it were me I would get the following:

A close friend has this and it is a really nice rig.

BAR's from what I've seen can be hit or miss in the accuracy department. The Remington Autoloaders are plagued with the moniker of being the "JAMMASTER"

In a semi-auto I'd go with a .308 any day over a 30-06.

For deer in general, even in a bolt gun, I'd prob take the .308.... I'm a fan of short actions. The .06 is a true multi-purpose gun, and you can't take anything away from it, unless you are trying to fit a specific niche.... which you kinda are.
