RE: What' s your gun
Not saying it' s the best all around caliber but the 30-06 is hard to beat. There are other calibers that have an edge on the trusty 06.For deer size game the 270 Win and 30-06 in my opinion is some of the better ones. The 7MM Rem Mag is a great long distance round.Decide what game you' ll be hunting, the distances you expect to be shooting then decide which one will fill your needs.

As has been said earlier.....
*** Depends on what part of the country you hunt in (close or far shots versus state caliber requirements/limitations).
*** Depends on what you call " big game" . In most states, deer are thee " big game" because it is the biggest game animal they' ve got. In other states deer are the little guys and rate down there with antelope, sheep and goats.
What' s perfect in one part of the country for deer may well be inappropriate in another part of the country for brownies (both being big game in someone' s eyes); however, if I had to pick the imaginary " all round" caliber for NA then I' d pick a 338WinMag (UltraMag and 338/378 are okay " 338' s" too) they handle the big stuff well and for sure handle the smaller stuff with one arm tied behind their back.
So, wherever/whatever " big game" you hunt, just....

I use a .366 D.G.W. for everything from African game to white tails. It launches a 250 grain slug at 3253 and a 300 grain pill at 2970. As for trajectory, it blows the Big Green 300 Ultra into the weeds and the .366' s energy at any range follows suit. for example at 300 yards the 250 grain bullet has only 3995 foot pounds of energy left, and at 600 yards it is alittle under 2600 foot pounds. Do not get me wrong I do not believe in long range shots, those are for the target shooters not hunters. I am more impressed with the hunter that shows me a deer with powder burns on it' s coat then a hunter that got his deer on an iffy shot at however many hundred yards.
If you need a rifle with close in and long range smash check out the .366 D.G.W. It is in the tenth edition of cartridges of the world.
