I' m in the market for a new rifle that will serve as my primary deer gun and was hoping some of ya' ll could give some advice. I' m really looking for something that can do the job, but for a reasonable price. Bottom line, what' s the best buy on the market right now?
One more thing, anybody got any opinions on the Marlin 1849s? Those are some nice lookin lever actions.
Thanks for any help,
TN Red

Just about any brand of rifle and probably 50 or so various calibers on the market now will do the job, but we' ve all got our favorites.
Since price is an issue, I' d take a look at the Savage line. If you can spring for a little more money, I' m a big fan of Tikka.

I agree with Robert. I have a Savage 7mm mag, and I love it. I really researched it, and I think I made the right choice. If you are a little shy about kick you should probably get a .270 I don' t think you can go wrong with either. Walmart has very good deals on combos. The scope that comes on it isn' t bad, but you might want to change it later. Very good investment for a little over $300. If you want something even cheaper check out a handirifle. They are single shots, but they are good guns for about $200. I am checking them out now, and they seem to be a great deal. I am getting a .44 mag in that, but it is a little undersized for a primary rifle.

Another vote for the NEF HandiRifle/ H&R. Great value. And what you save on the rifle you can add to mounting a good scope. So it' s a single- you' ll just make a more sure first shot. Caliber- .308, 7mm-08, .270. 30-06, all good. I' m wanting H&R to put out a .257 Roberts. Good luck.

Remington 710 is a good gun to start out with. Not....Savage,Ruger would be wise choices in this matter ...stay with a 270 or a 7-08 or 06 and you' ll never regret buying it .

Id look real good at the Savage package rifles in 30-06. The scopes on them arent the best but will get u bye until you can replace with a better one. I would stay away from the Remington 710s just because ive heard more negative remarks on them than all others combined.

Heres the Savage i would consider in 30-06. The listed prices are higher than what u will pay at a gunstore.
