My first centerfire was a 600 Mohawk in .243. About as "plain-Jane" as 600s go - lacking the rib and shark-fin front sight.
I felt like I "settled" on it, really wanting a more expensive (yeah, 12-year-old on a paper-route budget) M788. Today on GunBroker, it's rare I see a M600 going for less than a M788 - even some M700s -of similar quality and condition. The original M600s(laminated stock, rib, etc.) do have kind of a "cult" following, especially in 6.5mm Magnum and .350 Magnum, but the Mohawksdon't carry with them the same kind of "exclusivity" the selling prices reflect.
In spite of its "cheap" purchase price, that M600 is every bit the shooter my pre-1990s M700s are, and in spite of its barrel length and contour, shoots right with two of my dedicated sub-MOA varmint guns out to 200 meters. Because of its weight and OAL, its IDEAL for calling coyotes and carrying in the brush for whitetails.
While most folks either "tolerate" (they ARE kinda Pontiac Aztek-ish) or hate the look, everyone I know who's owned one and sold it also regrets that they did.
