TOTOE...check out this ballistics site. It has good info on the 240 and 275 grain bullet. Looks like good deer range is not a lot over 100yds. After that the energy falls well below 1000 ft-lbs.

Guess you don't have to answer my question from the other post about which caliber you got...LOL

Usually your capabilities will fall short befor the 44 mag does. Not flaming you just think it this way. If you use a good hard cast bullet you can shoot through a deer or black bear all the way to 150 to 200 yards. Hard cast bullets are thing to behold. Usually people can't shoot acurately that far and I am one of them for me only 75 yards maybe just maybe with a perfect shot 100 yards. The 44 mag is devistating.

due to the extra power provided by larger caliber bullets 1000ft/lbs doesnt need to be the limit. like 445supermag said, they will punch a hole thru a deer at 200yards no problem if you can shoot that well.

propmahn is exagerating a lot. me personally 100 yards is definatly pushin it. It only goes about 1500 fps out of the muzzle and drops at 100 yards and if I have problems getting a 30-30 to kill at150 yards then I personally would touch the thing. Mabee I might use it at 50 but otherwise useless for a clean kill.

I have a 14" contender in 44 mag. I typically handload for it but really like the speer 270 factory load. I really like it for anything under 100yds. My last doe shot with it was 83 paces(i'm 6'3" pretty long steps). Shot slightly qaurtering away punched two nice holes the off-side the size of a quarter.

loads if you want to buy ammo I would recommend: 270 gr speer, 250 gr partition handgun, 240 and 300 gr hornady, more pricey but reall good loads come form buffalo bore and cor-bon.

i really like it for anything under 100yds. If you want any tips for reloading or any other questions email or ask. good luck

In a recent issue of american handgunner it recalls the story of Elemer shotting a deer at 500-600yards with his .44mag. now before you call him dumb, the deer was already wounded by a rifle hunter that Keith was guiding. so keith, who is a big fan of shooitng long ranges with sixguns(not necessarilly at game), in prone position with a 6.5" S&W.
To see if the story could possible be true, John Taffin (writer of the article), shoots at a old logcabin at 1/2 a mile and the bullets go thru the first wall (made of 6" to 8" diameter logs) and then sometimes thro the wall behind.
While i dont think you should shoot at 600 yards 200 will be fine ONLY if you can shoot that well
