The younger generation just does not want to use the same"Words" that their fathers and grandfathers used. Those terms are considered old fashion.

A lot of shooters actually believe that cartridge and caliber are the same thing. So when they see the different cartridge designations, they just think it is the same cartridge with a different name. Tom.
Tom,

I disagree with you on this one. My theory is that we have a generation of kids coming up through the ranks that are self entitled. They've been given everything. Why should they have to work after all. We all know it's hard work that gives you the knowledge and skill. Today's kids expect the box of ammo and go shoot it off, turn around throw the brass away and expect to get more when they ask for it.

NO! Not to beat a dead horse, . . .
This would be like shooting a .308 in a .30/06 or a 7mm/08 in a 7mm mag. The shorter cases would not seat in the throat/chamber and would case major issues!!

The only cartridge that I know that can be interchanged is a 38 specialcan be shot out of a.357 mag chamber but not the other way around.

Thank you replying everyone. I bought the m44 from my dad. he bought it from a gunsmithing student. So i think it should be fine, ive shot it many times. I was just wondering if it would be possible to shoot a 39 ina 54. I didnt think you could. By the way whats the R in 54R mean anyway?

R-Russian.
Nope. The "R" in 7.62x54R means rimmed. The round is also known as the 7.62mm Russian.

And no, you should absolutely not attempt to shoot 7.62x39 Soviet in a Mosin Nagant. If you do, for you family's sake, make sure your health and life insurance is paid up.

.44 Spc in a .44 Mag, .45 Colt in a .454 Casull in a .460 S&W Mag. There are a number of straight walled revolver cartridges that will shoot shorter, but otherwise dimensionally identical, cartridges. But the same is not the case with bottleneck rifle cartridges. If the headstamp doesn't match the barrel stamp, don't shoot it. When in doubt, don't do it.

The 7.62X54R chamber is so big, it would swallow up a 7.62X39mm cartridge. You could not even get it to fire! These are two completely different rounds, the only thing they have in common is the .310" bullet diameter.

When you see an "R" suffix on a Eurpoean cartridge designation, such as 8X60R or 7.62X54R, it indicates that the round is a RIMMED case, headspacing on the rim. Some cartridgesare made both ways, rimmed and rimless. EG., "7.92X57JS" and "7.92X57 JRS" The latter here is the rimmed version.

I got another question. I've been looking for a muzzle brake for it but the ones I found says it wont fit the Russian m44. Does anyone know why??
