RE: 257 Roberts?
Do you reload?? If you do then the 257 Roberts would be a great rifle for the "Youngin". Short action, lightweight rifle. I am not a fan of the quarter bores. But for a "youngin" where recoil can be an issue, it would be hard to make a finer pick.
If you do not reload then the cost of ammo can be a bit prohibitive. If you do not mind the extra cost of the ammo then go for it. The Roberts is definitely above the lesser calibers for effectiveness, yet the recoil is still light.
I have an uncle who has a 257 Roberts in a Remington pump rifle. This is the only rifle he has ever had, and hunted with. I hate to admit it but he has done very well with this cartridge all his life. And he has killed a bunch of deer with it.
If ammo cost is in the equation then I would consider the 243 for less cost of ammo. However the 243 is not the cartridge the Roberts is. I say that only from the standpoint that I like a larger diameter bullet. Tom.

Go for it. A great round. First rifle I got my son. Not only a great deer round but excellent groundhog round. First thing I did was replace the stock with a synthetic so he didn't have to worry about beating up the hardwood. I do reload and that helps in the ammo expense, but most people don't shoot more that a box or two of ammo a year so that shouldn't be an issue. He has shot close to 50 deer over the last5 year with it and a boat load of groundhogs.

The .243made the 250 Savage and the .257 Roberts obsolete...
Look at the ammo avaliable in stores...You'll see plenty of .243, .308, .270, 30-06, 30-30 and .223 ammo...
A few years back, I took a fellow hunting that used a .260 Remington...He fell on his scope and had to resight in his rifle, no big deal...Except, the dang fool had only brought a half a box of ammo with him...
We drove 45 miles one way and lost a morning hunt during the rut trying to get his gun ready to hunt with again...
If he had been shooting any of the above ammo, it would have been avaliable at the local service starion that is just down the road from one of our farms...

The Mrs has usedthe 257 Robertsfor 25 years now. It's a great deer cartridge for recoil sensitive shooters such as youth and women. The 243 isnt a bad choice either but if given a choice I would opt for the .257 for deer size game.

RE: 257 Roberts?
The 257 Roberts is an excellent deer round. I used one for several years and took many deer, coyotes, & feral hogs with it. I used handloads and not factory loads. However, Federal, Hornady, Remington, & Winchester load ammo for the 257. I had good luck with the Federal 120 gr. NPT when I first purchased my rifle. At one time Ruger chambered the UltraLight for the 257. My friend has one in 243 and for a small statured person this rifle would fit them well. His son is 14 and on the small side and this rifle fits him well and he can shoot it well. They use the Hornady 117 gr. BTSP load in his rifle.
