RE: New England Handi rifle
As a matter of fact, marlin is coming out with short action cartridges soon. They're got it on the website I believe. As to .243,have you ever considered the EXCELLENT 7mm08 cartridge? itproduces only very slght amount more recoil than .243.

I appreciate all the tips and advice. Think Im going to put the handi rifle in the closet.I looked up the Marlin XL7, but it doesnt come in .243. I had been looking at the Mossberg 100ATR. Just checked out the Stevens. Looks pretty good. It lists a little cheaper than the Mossberg according the their websites, but I can get the Mossberg with black synthetic stock from local hardware store for $299. Can I hear from some Stevens shooters and some Mossberg shooters? Go ahead make your sales pitches!

I heard thatMossberg guarantees 1 MOA with the100 ATR. Anybody else heard that? I found one in .243 with black synthetic stock for $250. If it will shoot 1 MOA out of the box for $250, I dont see how I can pass that up.

Danny, before shelving the Handi, read the FAQ's at Graybeards very carefully. The latch and latch shelf must be DRY. Close the action with some gusto to get tight/consistent lockup.
If you can get it shooting like you want it, you can then do a trigger job on your own. I did it with the info I found on Graybeards and the trigger is awesome.
Most likely, it will not cost you a lot of money to get it shooting. May take a little tinkering.
