Default 22 Rifle for Son!

My son is a good shot with his Beretta 12 Gauge, but he really wants a 22 Rifle for Christmas. I am looking for some suggestions! I may even want to put a scope on it as well. Any tips would be helpful.

I have a Ruger 10/22 I wouldn't hesitate to recommend. At 50 yards it's pretty much dead on. Pretty darn accurate. I've never tried it on paper at 100 yards to see how it would do. I originally bought the 10/22 and just bought the Carabine model instead of the anniversary edition I was looking at at the time which had a longer stainless steel barrel and a stainless trigger. My plans were to change the barrel and put a bull barrel on this one. However, it shoots soo great I haven't found a need to change barrels. I'm not found of how short the barrel is but that would be great for kids and it works great just makes the gun look short. There is a ton of aftermarket support for it as well.

IMO one of the better .22's on the market today. I've got a Simmons Deerfield 3x9x32mm scope on it which isn't the best scope out there I'm sure but it works just fine for everything I do. I've had mine for about 4 years probably. I got the 10/22 and the scope new at the same time.

The only problem I've had is the first magazine it came with didn't seem to want to feed the bullets right. I called Ruger about it and they sent me a new one and it works great. It jams everyonce in a while with my Butler Creek magazine that holds 25 but I think it's the magazine as it's not the best fitting magazine. The stock one seems a lot better but only holds 10 rounds. It's jammed before but I don't think it has all that much with the factory magazine. Overall it does pretty well and is very accurate. I really like it.

I really like the Savage bolt action 22's, but if you are going to get a semi auto I would go with the Ruger 10/22 also.

I bought a Marlin 60 to teach my kids to shoot rifles. I got one like this that came with a 4x20 scope for about $200 at Walmart.

I took my nephew to the range (with his mother's permission) last Saturday.

I say go for the 10/22. If your son is like most boys he will probably want to trick it out and the 10/22 is perfect for that.

Without knowing what you want it for, how old your son is or what your budget is it's a little hard to make a suggestion since there are literally a million .22's out there........

If you want something hunting oriented and higher end that he will cherish for life here is what I put together for myself:
