I've looked at the Remington 597 and the Ruger. What do you guys recommend? I will use it the squirrel hunt a little, but mainly just use it to target shoot (recreation).

I own a Remington 597 for target shooting. I LOVE IT. It is awsome, I have the composite stock version. With the ten shot clip full, and one shot in the barrel, I was able to empty the gun in about 2.2 seconds. THAT IS FAST. It is VERY accurate, and VERY light. I would definetly say go with the Remington. I also like that it has locks for the safety. You can turn the safety on, then lock it. If someone tries turnign the safety off, they can't.

TIDEJO-I have a Ruger 1022 and a Ruger in the 7722 bolt action. I love them both but would have to say the 7722 has the edge over the semi auto. Hope that helps.

I had a Remington 597 and I traded it off because the trigger was so terrible that it was next to impossible to shoot accurately. I opened it up to see why it was so heavy and almost threw it out the window. The system looks like it was made from leftover parts. Too much plastic, no facility for adjustment, and even polishing the hammer and sear didn't work. Also, the cheap plastic magazine didn't feed properly most of the time. I suggest going with the Ruger. Remington has lost their mind.

Pro-Line

The new Thompson Center 22 semi-auto is apparently an amazing gun. I guess the trigger's sweet out of the box and it is truly a "hole-cutter" from the get go.

Only problem is that you can but 2 597's or 10/22's for the price of the T/C.

If i was in the market for one i think i would look mostly the T/C. I have a ruger and it is great but i like straight clips and not so much the rotary.
From what i heard T/C hasnt got its new contender frame out yet because they are trying to pump out as many 22 as the can to meet demand.

I had a 597- not a terrible rifle, but not good enough for me not to sell either. Accuracy isn't too bad, but is not nearly on par with an older remington bolt action .22 I own. The trigger is way to heavy and unadjustable. The rifle also jammed alot- I had to clean the receiver ever 50 shots or so to prevent jamming- especially with lubed lead bullets. This much hassle for shooting a .22 alone was enough to get me to sell it.

I also thought the rifle was kind of ugly. The gray plastic stock didn't do much for me and the finish of the metal parts wasn't smooth and shiny but dull and rough. It didn't take much use before small amouns of rust started appearing on the barrel which I attributed to the cheapo finish. I guess I was expecting too much from a $120 rifle. You get what you pay for.

I currently own 597. It's ok. I used to own a 10/22 , which was a better rifle. I have decided to sell the 597 as I agree with Frizzellr, Remington has lost their mind with this one. A friend has the T-C. He loves it. You DO get what you pay for. Roman

get a ruger. their .22 is very good, dependable, and accurate. + aftermarked parts are very easy to come by
