Ha, ha - Pawildman.
Reading your post here and almost thought I'd written it! Almost exactly the same experience. Vari-X II 3-9x by any chance? I've been using factory Weatherby ammo to the same effect you describe.
Absolutely agree. The trigger isn't the best. Otherwise, I've no complaints.

The vanguard is a well made rifle for the money, but I would buy the 300win mag over a 300win mag since the vangaurd only comes with a 24" barrel which doesn't do justice to the 300 wby.

I have a Synthetic Vanguard in 7mm.Rem.Mag. It's an awesome rifle! Super accurate. Very comfortable to shoot. I love the stock feel! It's not the prettiest, but, I don't think the elk and deer I shoot with it will care. It's not real fond of low or even medium grade ammo. Fine for the range but not for hunting.
I haven't been impressed the Weatherby cartridges on paper. I guess for hunting they are fine.

I have a Sako L691 in 300 WBY and wouldn't trade it for anything. Even on an off day, I can get 3 round in 3/4 inch at 100 yards. I have killed a few deer with it, even though I bought it for elk (which I haven't hunted yet). One negative I'll say is that under 50 yards shooting a whitetail, they don't even know they have been hit usually. They run about 50 yards and drop. My 30-06 on the other hand with the same bullet weight will put them down in their tracks.
Recoil is manageable; I'm a big guy and can absorb recoil pretty well.
