Default Puma lever gun? any good?

Bass pro has the Puma lever guns for sale for $385 for the 16" model, and $479 for the 20" model inn 44 mag. I am looking for a 44 mag deer gun for Indiana. How does this gun rate over say a marlin?

I was looking of a handi rifle, but nobody local can get one.

I would pick the Marlin easily over this especially for the price you have quoted. I am not saying the Puma is a bad lever.

RH after watching the video, the Puma cannot be scope mounted as easily as the Marlin so it would without a doubt a Marlin for me.

I wouldn't buy one just because that dork owns one[&o]. Not a very impressive video, what I could stand watching of it anyway.

Buy American as much as possible , Puma's are made in Brazil , not that there's anything wrong with that but Marlins are made here and are far better IMO . I dont know about all that Cowboy action stuff but as for hunting Marlin hands down , we already allowed Winchester to close up shop .

If you want a similar gun to that puma , kinda like a Win M-94 then get a Mossberg 464 lever gun .

By the way I agree with Paul , that gun is DORK endorsed .

According to Paco Kelly, http://www.leverguns.com/, the Puma is very good, indeed. And he was talking about the one chambered for .454 Casull!

I bought my puma .357 for Cowboy action last year and I used it for deer also. You can get a scope mount from legacy sports (www.legacysports.com). They're good little rifles. We're I hunt 60 yards is an extremely long shot and i find that the short barrel and speed of the lever action comes in handy. Depending on wear your hunting I may be able to help you find one. I know that gander mountain carries them in stock and I know afew people around indiana who do have them and would probably be willing to part with them for around $300. You also may try posting some something on www.sass.net in the classifieds. Also check with your local gun shops to see if they can order them. I highly recommend the 20" octagon barrel. As far as a comparison between the puma, the marlin, and hr. I hunted with an hr for years and they're great for a single shot. The only thing I don't like about them is there's no follow up shot. The marlins are nice but they're also more expensive. The pumas aren't bad but the action isn't as good as the marlin and they don't handle some of the bigger stuff as well.
