Call me xenophobic, but I wouldn't travel into Mexico to hunt if you PAID me money. As my screen name denotes, I am all about keeping the hunting $$$ in the U.S. I do support free trade and I own some Nikon optics, for me, there's just too many places and species to hunt in the U.S. before looing elsewhere. Just my $0.02.
You're obviously smart enough to ask some good questions before the trip; I would advise going a step further and making at least one phone call to an attorney--just in case a nightmare unfolds. Good luck.

Be sure to get the facts straight ahead of time! There is a local ex-car dealer in my area that spent several months in a Mexican jail and lost his dealership and American gun rights for having bullets in his car! I believe that his case was supposed to go to the Supreme Court, I don't know if he got anything resolved or not!
Being a "criminal" in Mexico, they finally released him to American custody, as a felon! Due to a felony record, he has no gun rights and had to also get rid of a large gun collection!
To me its not worth the risk to hunt in Mexico!

It doesnt sound like a good idea.
Q.
Can I take a gun into Mexico?
A.
A permit to take a gun into Mexico is issued only in conjunction with a Hunting permit which is issued only for the period of the hunting season. This season depends on the area in which you would intend to hunt, and can be expensive if you intend to travel through several states. The same applies if you wish to have a gun onboard a vessel while cruising Mexican waters. Many yachts have a shotgun onboard for protection and run the risk of loosing the gun. to Mexican officials if boarded. A hand gun is absolutely not permitted and will definitely be taken if found. Depending on the official, you may or may not loose the shotgun.-Once the gun permit is issued with the hunting permit it must be renewed 60 days after the issue date, which in turn is then good for another 60 days when it then expires. If hunting in Mexico, you must have the hunting and gun permit as well as a guide or if checked by officials there could be a heavy fine and the loss of your shotguns (you are allowed 2).
It also seems that you need a guide even with a permit.

Reminds me of the story of the German POWs in a POW camp in Texas during WWII. Being the wise-guy NAZIS that they were, they escaped, and fled to Mexico. There the Mexicans grabbed them, and threw them in the local Jusgado. They finally managed to escape from the Mexicans, and promptly fled back to Texas, where they were GLAD to re-enter the U.S. POW compound!!

I just got a great idea--why not just take a bow? Even New York City and the Peoples Republic of Kalifornia don't hate bows.
