7.62 and 308 HELP!!

I might be wrong but isn't the .308 the same as the 7.62x54?
Most SKS's and AK's shoot the 7.62x39.
There is a 7.62X54 R cartridge, which is a Russian roundused in the Mosin-Nagant, Dragunov, and Russian heavy infantry machine guns. It is a very fat case with a rim, and there is NO WAY you could get it to chamber in a .308 Win. (7.62X51mm NATO) chamber. It might be possible to chamber a .308 round in the Russian chamber, but it would be very dangerous to fire it, because the case head would be unsupported due to the fat Russian chamber.
