RE: 260 rem or 7mm-08 rem ?
I'll throw my .02 in on the 7mm08 as I see no reason as of yet for remington even coming out with the .260 except for sales gimmick. I cannot imagine a better whitetail cartridge within any suitable range most of us have any business shooting in the first place. The 7mm08 is 1 of my all time favorites. All the 7mm08s I have seen/worked on/built/shot were extremely accurate, very low recoil, and outstanding terminal performance.

RE: 260 rem or 7mm-08 rem ?
Ridge, you bring up a good point about the aerodynamics of a 140gr, 6.5 mm bullet...The only problem I have with the .260 or the 7mm-08 is their starting velocity...While I shoot a .243, if I wanted to go long range, I'd reach for my brother's .270...
Maybe Remington should bring out a 6.5-06....:D |
RE: 260 rem or 7mm-08 rem ?
I asked the same question several years ago when I was buying my wife a rifle to hunt with. I own several 7mm's and it would have made perfect sense for me to go with the 7mm-08. However after researching each gun I decided to go with the .260 and I do not regret it one bit. I LOVE it and when my bride is not at the camp I take it with me if I am hunting from a climber or loc on. I have killed several deer with it and she killed one opening day a few years back. We shoot the 120 gr accutip and I have yet had a deer that did not drop in it's tracks or at the most do a flip. The first deer I killed with it was standing 315 yards from my stand down a fire lane and she did a flip and didn't move after that. I've killed them as close as 50 yards too and when it hits it does some damage.
The problem with asking opinions on a forum is that everybody has their own opinion and most of the time are not open to anyone else's. I like the 7mm-08 as well but, if I were to buy another small gun like my wife's I wouldn't hesitate to buy another .260 |
RE: 260 rem or 7mm-08 rem ?
I had the same decision back in 03 and ended up with the 7-08......I liked it so much I got another one this year. It splits time with my 270 most of the year. Hard to put a 270 down and walk away clean when deer are involved...

RE: 260 rem or 7mm-08 rem ?
I also asked this same questions a few years back and decided on the 7mm-08 and have had good success with it. However I purchased a 260 Rem. last year and I'm looking forward to reloading and see how it does...:D

Personal preference is the 7-08. Nice flatline shooting with lots of bullet options.

RE: 260 rem or 7mm-08 rem ?
The 7MM-08, ammo will be much easier to find. The .260 has had a hard time catching on. No deer would ever tell the difference though!
If you are looking for a 6.5-06, look at the .264 Win Mag. Its basically a 6.5-06 with the stupid belt! |
RE: 260 rem or 7mm-08 rem ?
ORIGINAL: nchawkeye Maybe Remington should bring out a 6.5-06....:D And make it Ackley Improved... that'd be a screamer! 7mm-08. Hands down. I like the .260 just fine, bullistics aside... the 7mm-08 is a bit more versatile. You won't notice any difference when you shoot either of them, and your game probably won't either. A little bit bigger (heavier) bullet can be nice with those high mountain winds. |
