260 rem or 7mm-08 rem ?

Hi guys !

I know this question has been asked a 1000 times but…..which of these 2 calibersis more useful in a light short action rifle for hunting deer and sheep ? What’s your pick ? I reload so factory ammo is not a concern !

The popularity of it these days would suggest the 7-08.

The 7mm-08.. I think you have more bullet and ammo options with the 7mm.

I would choose the 7mm-08, but either one should be great with 120-140 gr gameking or sst.

I'd get the 7-08 as well. I've never been a big fan of the 260.

A moly'd 120 TSX is serious medicine.

Tough I like the 6.5mm bullets for deer sized game, my personal favorite is the 6.5x55SE, the 7mm-08 rathern than the 6.5mm-08 (260 Rem.) would make a lot of sese as far as bullet selection.

I love the 7mm-08.
Since you hand load you may be able to get 140gr bullet in 260 up to a useful velocity. I think most factory loads are 120gr which I'm notas fond of in a 6.5mm.

My brother has a Model 7 in 7mm-08 that he bought back in the 80s...One of my hunting partners used it to kill a nice buck one evening and went to get him one the first year the .260 came out...The dealer had a .260 on the shelf and knocked off $150 for it...He killed a few deer with it, bought reloading equipment for it, talked about it's virtues for a couple of years and then quit using it....He showed up at deer camp last year with a .243, never have found out why he ditched the .260...

I'd go with a 7mm-08 a .260 won't do anything a '08 won't do....

I'll throw my .02 in on the 7mm08 as I see no reason as of yet for remington even coming out with the .260 except for sales gimmick. I cannot imagine a better whitetail cartridge within any suitable range most of us have any business shooting in the first place. The 7mm08 is 1 of my all time favorites. All the 7mm08s I have seen/worked on/built/shot were extremely accurate, very low recoil, and outstanding terminal performance.

Ridge, you bring up a good point about the aerodynamics of a 140gr, 6.5 mm bullet...The only problem I have with the .260 or the 7mm-08 is their starting velocity...While I shoot a .243, if I wanted to go long range, I'd reach for my brother's .270...

Maybe Remington should bring out a 6.5-06....:D

I asked the same question several years ago when I was buying my wife a rifle to hunt with. I own several 7mm's and it would have made perfect sense for me to go with the 7mm-08. However after researching each gun I decided to go with the .260 and I do not regret it one bit. I LOVE it and when my bride is not at the camp I take it with me if I am hunting from a climber or loc on. I have killed several deer with it and she killed one opening day a few years back. We shoot the 120 gr accutip and I have yet had a deer that did not drop in it's tracks or at the most do a flip. The first deer I killed with it was standing 315 yards from my stand down a fire lane and she did a flip and didn't move after that. I've killed them as close as 50 yards too and when it hits it does some damage.

The problem with asking opinions on a forum is that everybody has their own opinion and most of the time are not open to anyone else's. I like the 7mm-08 as well but, if I were to buy another small gun like my wife's I wouldn't hesitate to buy another .260

I had the same decision back in 03 and ended up with the 7-08......I liked it so much I got another one this year. It splits time with my 270 most of the year. Hard to put a 270 down and walk away clean when deer are involved...

I also asked this same questions a few years back and decided on the 7mm-08 and have had good success with it. However I purchased a 260 Rem. last year and I'm looking forward to reloading and see how it does...:D

Personal preference is the 7-08. Nice flatline shooting with lots of bullet options.

The 7MM-08, ammo will be much easier to find. The .260 has had a hard time catching on. No deer would ever tell the difference though!
If you are looking for a 6.5-06, look at the .264 Win Mag. Its basically a 6.5-06 with the stupid belt!

Maybe Remington should bring out a 6.5-06....:D

And make it Ackley Improved... that'd be a screamer!

7mm-08. Hands down. I like the .260 just fine, bullistics aside... the 7mm-08 is a bit more versatile. You won't notice any difference when you shoot either of them, and your game probably won't either. A little bit bigger (heavier) bullet can be nice with those high mountain winds.

RE: 260 rem or 7mm-08 rem ?

I thought I might stir the pot a bit.

You know Ridge- by the way how are your doing?- the original short magnums were developed by Remington and brought out as a .350 and 6.5 Rem Mag. This is a short fat case as you know, that works through short actions not unlike the 7mm-08. With a 24 inch barrel the 6.5 can be loaded up with 120 gr bullets at about 3200 fps. 129 gr with IMR 4350 for 3000 fps and the 140 gr with H 4831 for 2900 fps.

Now I know this is a belted case, but headspace it on the shoulder and it is just fine. My gunsmith really likes the belted cases properly headspaced.

Remington is now again loading ammo for this round. It is seeing a resurgence.

Short action with long action performance.

Then I guess we bring up the idea of the new short magnums.

Decisions, Decisions.

your story mirrors mine, as i own several .284 cals, buti bought the misses a model 7 in 260, and well now i carry it 98% of the time[&:]

if i was limited to buying ammo (i reload so its not an issue) i would opt for the 08 simply because you can get ammo for it anywhere, and if you roll your own you get a wider selection of bullets, but i love both cals, and either will be fine for deer;)

I've had good luck using a little 7mm08.The deer have dropped in their tracks.I also like the 270 Win but that's a whole different subject.I've never had any dealings with a .260 Rem.

I have a model 7 in 260 and love it, so much so that I hope to save up to be able to get a GAP in 260.

I have a remington model 7 in 7mm-08, I bought a second one when I introduced my wife into hunting and she stole it from me. My brother has a mate in 260. They are very similar rounds 6 of one half a dozen of the other.
