Does your Argentine still have the crest? If so then I would not change it. You will kill the value of the gun. You can find surplus 7.65 from a number of outlets like Sarco Inc, Samco Global etc.

I will be honest and upfront and say I'm not a gunsmith and I don't know jack about changing barrels, head spacing and chamber pressures. However from the way these other guys make it sound I think you would be better off just leaving the gun alone. What do you use it for and how often do you shoot it? I don't think by messing with it you will really save any money, unless you shoot a lot.
You are going to have to get a barrel, then most likely pay to have the work done. And from the way it sounds you will have to reload anyway. How long do you think it will take to recoup the money you spent by shooting cheaper ammo? I bet a long time. And you will have ruined the value of the gun.
I say leave the gun alone in it's original condition and shoot it for what is, even if it really isn't worth anything. You have a nice war relic that is functional and fun to shoot. Then take the money you would have spent trying to convert this one and just get a rifle more suited to your needs. You can get a really decent bolt action for $300-$500 now. That just sounds like a better idea all the way around to me.

Just to throw a monkey wrench in this whole deal. There are a # of small ring barrel/calibers you could change to, one of them being a 300 savage. I my self would go to a 7 x 57 (7 mm mauser) or a 35 rem. But I am a big fan of the 7 x 57 (I've only got 3) and feel it's an excelent choice for deer size game and ammo is availble on line or in a select few gun shops. If I did a barrel change I would put a bold trigger on it (just a lot nice trigger) then a new stock, and still just have a pigs ear. But it's sort of cool to go to the range with an old beat up mauser and out shoot some of the newer stuff, good luck with your desicion.

IN OTHER WORDS, LEAVE THE GUN ALONE, AND USE YOUR MONEY FOR RELOADING EQUIPMENT FOR THE 7.65x53MM CARTRIDGE.........

Thanks for the responses guys. I should have mentioned that the gun isn't original. It was sporterized when my grandfather bought it back in the 1960's. I already do buy cheap ammo as well, and to be honest this question was much more of a hypothetical thing that I've been thinking about for a while. I thank you all for the advice, comments, ideas. And another thanks to those that had ideas for finding ammo for cheap!
