I currently use a .300 Wby for moose and caribou, my wife shoots a .300 saum and she really likes that one.

The '06 with an aptly applied Barnes TSX.

Deer: 150 grain
Elk: 180 grain
Moose: 220 grain

personal favorite 180 grain for anything

I agree with cmore. The 30-06 is a good all around cartridge but I do not think you need to go with the 220gr for moose. I have taken moose with the 180. Just buy premium bullets and shoot into the engine room. Also the 180 gr kicks less than the 220 and I know the ballistics of the 180!

I've been a .30-06 fan for years. It can handle all three species listed. However, after purchasing my .300 WSM for a mule deer hunt last fall, I now prefer it. There is plenty of factory ammo available, and federal ammunition loads their .300 WSM slightly superior to their .300 WM. The recoil in the .300 WSM only slightly more than the .30-06, yet it delivers more than 500lb more energy. The low trajectory makes it ideal for those 300 yard shots (on the cut overs, power lines, or out west)

I'll never sell my .30-06, but it will spend more time in the safe.
