RE: What Caliber would you pick for deer/elk/moose???
Originally, I didn't see this one in your list, but I believe the 338 Federal would be an awesome round for all three. I am not an elk or moose hunter, but really don't see why you wouldn't want a .338 dia bullet with recoil like an '06. My only concern is that you may be limited to yardage with this one. Not as much as say a 30-30, but somewhere around the 200 yard mark would be my personal limit.

RE: What Caliber would you pick for deer/elk/moose???
A re-edit 1.243 Win -- deer only. not appropriate for elk & moose, IMO. 2.257 Weatherby Mag -- deer, maybe elk. probably not for moose. 3.257 Roberts -- deer. probably not forelk. not for moose. 4.25-06 Rem -- deer, maybe elk. probably not for moose 5.264 Win Mag --140 grain bullet with great sectional density. What exactly does it give up to 7 and 30 cal magnums? Bigger ver of a 6.5x55 7.270 Win -- deer, fine. elk, ok. moose. 8.Good "Ol" 30/30 -- with leverlrevolution ammo a 200 yard deer gun, a 100 yard Elk gun and probably the same for Mooseo 9.260 Rem -- Deer ,ELK and Moose at medium ranges see 6.5x55 10.270 WSM --Deer,ELk and Moose 11.280 Rem --Deer,ELK and Moose. 12.7mm Mauser -- Deer,Elk and Moose. 13.7mm-08 Rem -- Deer,ELK and Moose see 7x57 mauser 14.7mm Rem Mag -- Deer,ELK and Moose 15.308 Win -- Deer,ELK and MOOse 16.30-06 Spfd -- see 308 winchester 17.300 H&H Mag --All 3 18.300 WSM All 3 19.300 Rem Ultra Mag All 3 + longer range 20.300 Win Mag All 3 21.300 Weatherby Mag All 3 + longer range(handloads) or Weatherby FActory ammo 21.325 WSM -- All 3 22.338 Win mag -- All 3 + anything that needs to be stopped 3.375 H&H Mag -- see 338. 24.7mm WSM -- see 7 rem mag 25.338 Federal -- Medium range cartridge for all 3. 26.7mm Weatherby Mag -- ditto the other 7s. 27.30-378 Weatherby Mag -- at $5 a round, I'd probably invest in a smaller cartridge for deer. 28.340 Weatherby mag -- for deer?? although I don't believe in 'overkill' (dead is dead) I probably wouldn't swat flies with a post maul, either. 29.50 BMG -- seriously? have fun carrying it around. 30. 6.5 X 55 Swedish -- seems light for moose, but from what I understand, the Swedes use it all the time. |

Oldelkhunter
You missed two of the best cartridges for deer/elk/moose out to 250-300yards the 35 Whelen (sailing whelen) and the 358 Win. Now your lists is pretty well complete! Oh the 35 Rem is a real hammer on all three out to 100-125 yards a 358 cal 200/220gr at 2200fps way out classes the 30-30 on elk and moose. |

Just curious, as I've never hunted elk or moose, but, from what I've read, I seem to recall that while moose are bigger, elk are tougher. Has this been your experience? |

They are the opposite of a moose, stamina and lots of it. I have seen well hitlung shot elk make a pretty good scamper after the shot, something I've never seen a moose do. God forbid you single lung or hit a liver and push him! They don't give you the 2nd, 3rd or 4th chance as a rule like a bull moose will. I agree they are tough in every aspect. IMO a cartridge that is suitable for one is suitable for the other and likewise if not suitable for one it isn't suitable for the other. It's a matter of size of animal, areas they inhabit, and tougher situations (shot angles, etc). |
