Originally, I didn't see this one in your list, but I believe the 338 Federal would be an awesome round for all three. I am not an elk or moose hunter, but really don't see why you wouldn't want a .338 dia bullet with recoil like an '06. My only concern is that you may be limited to yardage with this one. Not as much as say a 30-30, but somewhere around the 200 yard mark would be my personal limit.

If this had been asked last year, I would have said .30-06, since there is a wide variety of ammo out there for it and I grew up shooting it. But now that I have a .45-70, I would have to go with that. You can get bullets from 200 grain all the way up to 540 grain, and they all pack a big punch. Also, if you are out for moose or elk, most of those places have bears and if I get crossways of one of those again, I want at least a .45-70 in my hand.

You missed two of the best cartridges for deer/elk/moose out to 250-300yards the 35 Whelen (sailing whelen) and the 358 Win. Now your lists is pretty well complete! Oh the 35 Rem is a real hammer on all three out to 100-125 yards a 358 cal 200/220gr at 2200fps way out classes the 30-30 on elk and moose.

Just curious, as I've never hunted elk or moose, but, from what I've read, I seem to recall that while moose are bigger, elk are tougher. Has this been your experience?

Elk are probably the toughest hoofed animal in the world to bring down and that is just my experience with them. Hundreds of thousands of Moose are killed in Europe with a 6.5x55 or 30-06 type cartridges. My concern with a 25 would be hitting bone and moose have big bone. If you picked your shot and were in no rush it would surely ventilate them as well. Tons of moose are killed with 30/30's,35 remington and 06 in the Northeast. I would never attempt to go Elk hunting with a 30/30 or 35 remington, why would I limit my range to 100 yards or so when 100-300 and even farther(for the impatient) is possible ?.

I have shot moose with a bow, ml and CF - having harvested myself 14, guided for 9 anda number others with partners. Moose areBIG but lack stamina, they seldom show affects of a shot but rarily go far either.In terms of bull moose on several occasion I have seen 2, 3 and as many as 4 shots hit the vitals and still have him standing on all 4. Some think b/c they don't scamper off after being well hit they are babies but the fact is they are BIG and it takes them longer to feel a hit vs even an elk. I'd say they are pretty durable just not real tough to trail;).

In terms of elk I have a little experience with them as well have taken 12 (2 bow and 10 rifle). They are the opposite of a moose, stamina and lots of it. I have seen well hitlung shot elk make a pretty good scamper after the shot, something I've never seen a moose do. God forbid you single lung or hit a liver and push him! They don't give you the 2nd, 3rd or 4th chance as a rule like a bull moose will. I agree they are tough in every aspect.

IMO a cartridge that is suitable for one is suitable for the other and likewise if not suitable for one it isn't suitable for the other. It's a matter of size of animal, areas they inhabit, and tougher situations (shot angles, etc).
