RE: What Caliber would you pick for deer/elk/moose???
ORIGINAL: kpatte26 As for the 7mm one of my friends who is a sniper claims that it is a great high power caliber. I do not know how easy it would be to find ammo if you left it at home or lost it while travelling. |
RE: What Caliber would you pick for deer/elk/moose???

Elk moose and deer in that order. No question, 300 WSM. Short action, lighter rifle, new technology, great factory loads, ....

RE: What Caliber would you pick for deer/elk/moose???
Sorry if I offend anyone, but here's my 2 cents (if it's even worth that):
1.243 Win -- deer only. not appropriate for elk & moose, IMO. 2.257 Weatherby Mag -- deer, maybe elk. probably not for moose. 3.257 Roberts -- deer. probably not forelk. not for moose. 4.25-06 Rem -- deer, maybe elk. probably not for moose 5.264 Win Mag -- bullets are probably on the light side, but it's a better choice for elk & moose than any of the 25s, IMO 6.270 Weatherby Mag -- OK for all three, though probably not ideal for moose. 7.270 Win -- deer, fine. elk, ok. moose- would prefer a bit more. 8.Good "Ol" 30/30 -- love it for deer. maybe ok at close range for elk and really close range for moose, though I'd prefer more oomph. 9.260 Rem -- I'd recommend for deer only, same as .243 10.270 WSM --OK for all three, though probably not ideal for moose. 11.280 Rem --about the same as 270 win: great on deer,maybeso-so on elk,not quite as much as I'd like for moose. 12.7mm Mauser -- deer, fine. elk, maybe borderline. moose- would prefer a bit more. 13.7mm-08 Rem -- deer, fine. elk, a bit light.moose,I'dprefer more 14.7mm Rem Mag -- This is probably the 'threshhold' cartridge where I'd be OK with it for all three. Probably better moose cartridges available 15.308 Win -- great on deer, ok on elk, could probably get by with it on moose. 16.30-06 Spfd -- has probably taken PLENTY of all three species, though maybe not ideal for moose. 17.300 H&H Mag -- all of the 300 mags are probably ok for all 3 species, IMO 18.300 WSM 19.300 Rem Ultra Mag 20.300 Win Mag 21.300 Weatherby Mag 21.325 WSM -- good all-around choice 22.338 Win mag -- THE round for elk and moose? 23.375 H&H Mag -- seems like alot of recoil to deal with to shoot a deer. great for the big 2, though. 24.7mm WSM -- see 7 rem mag 25.338 Federal -- maybe ok for all three, albeit atsomewhat closerranges for elk and moose. 26.7mm Weatherby Mag -- ditto the other 7s. 27.30-378 Weatherby Mag -- at $5 a round, I'd probably invest in a smaller cartridge for deer. 28.340 Weatherby mag -- for deer?? although I don't believe in 'overkill' (dead is dead) I probably wouldn't swat flies with a post maul, either. 29.50 BMG -- seriously? have fun carrying it around. 30. 6.5 X 55 Swedish -- seems light for moose, but from what I understand, the Swedes use it all the time. |
