Rem. 597 cycling problems
I was given a Remington 597 in .22 caliber for my birthday about a year ago. I shot about 500 rounds through it and I noticed that every now and then the bolt would close on the shell before it fully ejected. Now I can't shoot 3 rounds through it without it closing on the shell. Has anyone else had these problems? Any suggestions?

RE: Rem. 597 cycling problems
Break it down and give it a good cleaning, pay close attention to the chamber, the extractor in the bolt, and the extractor groove in the face of the barrel, all are commen problems that create jams. Slight build up of rust or carbonin the chamber will hold on to the spent case and allow the extractor to loose its grip, carbon build up in the extractor groove will allow the extractor to miss the case when the bolt opens, check for carbon build up under the extractor, this will also cause the extractor to loose its grip because it isnt getting full engagement of the rim. The extractor could also be worn, a quick simple test; slip a round up into the bolt face, rim under the extractor, lightly shake the bolt, the round should remain in the bolt face, if it doesnt, the extractor will need some work.
