#1-forget any package deal. I would choose browning a-bolt over the others. Here's food for thought-Whatever you buy,you want it to be good enough and last long enough for your grandson to not be able to wear it out so no matter what, you hope to use it your entire life-correct? Break it down over your next 50 years of use and you'll see it's not over .08 cents aweek difference from the cheapest savage (stevens) package deal to a browning a-bolt with a nikon or weaver scope. Why buy something you won't be satisfied with later only to trade up (costly) to a combo that you'll love and trust under ANY conditions? If you settle for cheaper now you'll upgrade later to what you really want at a lot higher cost than .08 cents a week.
Just like if you decide to settle for another cartridge like .243 instead of the .300wsm. No matter what you won't be satisfied till you get exactly what you want/need.

If this is your first rifle, you might want to get something a little more forgiving on your shoulder. No need to develop bad habits at a young age.

Skip the package deal. I had one and the scope and rings were not what you would want if you shoot more than a couple a times a year. The Savage itself would be good. Weatherby Vanguard has some good deals. Saw a new Weatherby Vanguard Sporter (walnut stock)in 270 at Sportsmans Warehouselast weekfor only $459. Would have brought it home but was looking for a 7MM-08 or 308.

My Tikka T3 Lite Stainless in 300 WSM knocked some sense into my little brother. He is 6' 2" and 180 pounds. He only shoots rifles that are a 270 or smaller now. im 5' 10" and 155 pounds and i have no problem with it. If you know how to shoot and handle recoil it wont be a problem but if you dont know how to properly handle the recoil you will regret pulling the trigger.

I've shot a T3 Lite Stainless in 270WSM and 300WSM. And I didn't think the recoil was bad at all. Then again I'm 6'1" 215lbs, and have been shooting heavy recoiling guns for many many years.
