If I had to choose it would be 10/22 hands down, I've got one with minor mods and its a shooter, check at the gun shows or stores for a deal on a used one. If I had to choose between model 60 and 597 it would be model 60 from experience.

I've owned the Ruger, Marlin and Remington. A 10/22 is a fun gun and a great plinker. With some of the mods stated on this thread, it can be made to shoot as accurately as any .22 available. The Marlin is a little less open to customization, but tends to shoot better out of the box and normally doesn't need as much tinkering. The 597 I owned shot 5" groups. At the muzzle. Someone stated the 597 would make a good table leg or anchor. I think that gives the 597 entirely too much credit.

The model 60 is great but you want the removable clip its much more convenient then the tube mag on the 60. Go ahead and spend a little extra and get the 24'' barrel deluxe 10/22.

There ya go-reports from several shooters and 2 GUNSMITHS telling you to get a 10/22,take it for what it's worth.
