Sorry Ranger, just referring to you shooting groundhogs and making light of the annual groundhog sees his shadow thing. Seeing this year 2 in canada predict spring but the one in PA claimed more winter...you shooting them at 250. Ah never mind...poor attempt at a funny.

I will have to say I personally don' t like the 710 either. Starter gun? What the heck does that mean? Most people I know still have their first deer guns and are still able to use them if needed. Most guns last a lifetime, but the 710 is a throw away.

To address the magazine reviews on the 710. When was the last time you ever saw a bad reveiw of any firearm in the GUN magazines? They are paid to publish good things about their sponsors guns, not negatives. If you are happy with yours then whatever we say doesn' t matter anyway.

I' m what you might call an ' 06 fanatic.... so when the 710 came out, I bought one. Granted, most of the criticisms you guys are tossing out about it are right on target. It IS ugly, It IS cheap, It IS stiff...... but then again it shoots pretty well. Put it this way..... at deer camp I' m taking the model 700 or the Browning, but for hog hunting in the middle of summer when you don' t want to ding up the good rifles, the 710 is perfect!! Hey, it can' t get any uglier, right?

F4YG hit the nail on the head about Magazine reviews. Why would a magazine give any negitive reviews and chance losing the big bucks of advertisement from these companies. If you believed the reviews the about the 710,it would make other rifles obsolete.Thankfully most of us could read between the lines.

Thankfully we handle the guns before we buy them Ruger, lol. The 710s I handled felt unbalanced and the bolt and trigger pull was horrible. If I ever own one it wont be my fault, some distant and disliked relative would have to leave it to me in their will.If that happens,,,,,anyone want it?lol

Some say that for it' s cost it makes a good knock around brush gun.
Well for that cost I got 3 Nagants and 2 are M-44' s which make great brush guns. One is brand new never issued. And I' d trust a Russian Nagant to be more durable than the 710.
In addition for about $100 less than the 710 I got a model ' 98 type FR-8 in .308 that already has a good set of iron sights that make it great for brush hunting. The rear blade can be turned from " open" to peep sights.

Maybe the good thing is the newbies will buy 710' s and leave all the good milsurps to those of us who appreciate them.
