RE: Long range yote rifle?

After much reading and researching, I think I want to go with the 6.5mm/284 that's doing so well in the long range competitions. It kind of screws me up though since it's not a foctory cartridge. Means I have to build a rifle and strictly handload. Now comes the fun part, I have to pick an action, barrel, etc...Any suggestions on those parts? I'm looking at Ruger(I like the 3 way safety),Browning(love how smooth they are), Remington(easy to come by, but everybody uses them),or Savage(cheap and easy to change barrels on if I change my mind later). BTW, I'll be having the gun built by a respectable gunsmith.

well you can buy a savage F-class model 12 chambered in 6.5/284 its a tuned action, and reports I've read has stated outstanding accuracy.
If your gonna build, go with a long action, they'll fit a short action but the long high BC bullets use alot of powder room for bullet storage.
I went through the same dilemma as you awhile back, the 6.5/284 had just been legitimized so I went with the 6.5 Gibbs, cause I like making cases and working on loads, and the gibbs will run the same bullets 300 fps faster, yet its still on a standard long case (270 win.) anyway I used a LH 700 action, put a senduro weight kreiger 1/8 twist barrel and put in in a joel russo A5-L, a loopy 8.5x25 mark 4, M1, TMR sets on top in seekins precision bases and rings with 20 MOA built into it. a pic

That's a nice looking rig you have there. I didn't want anything that I'd have to make brass for, and I can get brass for the 6.5/284 from several differant manufacturers. I was wondering about action length. I'd prefer a short action, but will use a long action if it'll feed better.

The long action will give you more room to mess with seating depth on the VLD type bullets. Go with the long. ;)

You might look at what Cooper Arms has to offer. My 6.5x284 is built on the long single shot action M22. I furnished the wood on this one and topped it off with Leupold Mark IV 8.5x25x50 LR/T M1.It has a 26" fluted SS Liljabarrel and the trigger breaks like glass at 20 oz.

Imostly punch paper but dont see why it wouldnt work on distant yotes. I agree, when using the 140+gr bullets, the long action is the way to go.

.243 with a nice Wichester 55 gr. SupremeĀ® Ballistic Silvertip will do nicely.

I'm still looking for suggestions on barrel, action, and stock options. Thanks for the replies so far.
