RE: Long range yote rifle?
ORIGINAL: jeepkid ORIGINAL: iloveto4x4 ORIGINAL: oldelkhunter nothing less then a 338/378 would work on something like that I asked for input on here because I know alot of you guys either have or have had some of these calibers and that some of you do long range shooting. I personally feel that the 22s run out of steam too quickly at long ranges. Sure they're fine for punching holes in paper that far away, but I like quick, clean kills on critters. Please reserve input for serious comments only. I don't want to pick them up with a sponge and sandwich bag, but I don't want to just wound them either. The 7mm is way overkill for yotes at that distance, sure it would work great. But, I'm guessing its not a custom LR rifle, so hitting yotes at that distance and seeing your hits at that distance will be a lot harder with the 7mm. Will you be dialing or using a custom reticle? A fast twist 22-250 would be awesome, cheaper to shoot, you can see your hits, and plenty of power for yotes. If you just really want to use your 7mm, then try the Sierras or the Bergers and figure your drops and wind drift and have fun. I've got plenty of time to figure out what cartridge/rifle/optics combo I want and get everything setup and dialed in. The only reason we're looking for something that's factory chambering is that neither one of us wants to spend the time farting with brass for a wildcat. Thanks for all the input so far...Keep it coming! |

RE: Long range yote rifle?
Yes, we plan to reload for it. We already reload for the 223s and 22-250s.

RE: Long range yote rifle?
Why don't I just call up an air strike or artillery barrage? I asked for input on here because I know alot of you guys either have or have had some of these calibers and that some of you do long range shooting. There hasn't been a serious post here in quite a long time on this site just survey after survey talking about obscure cartridges. 7MM Magnum cartridge take your pick . BTW where do you live that you need to shoot yotes at 800 yards.? |
RE: Long range yote rifle?
We live in CO and where we hunt, the yotes have gotten smart and stay out past 500yrds. Even with calls they won't come in much closer than that. They get quite a bit of pressure and know the tricks and that they're safe out there. We want to re-educate them a little.
When I said to use the reticle to adjust as needed, I meant for windage. Figure with a good scope and range finder we can dial yardage in without a problem. Thanks for all the good responses so far! |
RE: Long range yote rifle?
I just purchased a ruger m77vt in 25-06 and I have ordered a 5-20X44 Nikon Monarch to put a top of the rifle for just this purpose, I haven't gotten it put together yet as I work overseas and will return early April to see how it does. Obviously I am hoping for it to do well, Good luck with your decision. If anyone out there has a factory load suggestion I am all ears.

RE: Long range yote rifle?
Why does everyone get there panties in a knot when a guy wants to use a beefy gun for yotes.
....overkill this overkill that..blahblah blah.Who cares its a PEST. I would shoot one with a 50cal if I could, that would be awsome to see the dog blow up. Alot of these "recreation varmint hunters" don't understand if you live/work on a ranch yotes are a pain in the butt and a good one is a dead one. I'm done stirring the S#%t pot tonight:) |
RE: Long range yote rifle?
Step on a roach, now that's overkill.
