Need help FAST...
I just returned from a gun show and a dealer has a Winchester .model 94, .375 Big Bore, top eject, brand new in the box for $500. Is this a fair price, or is it overinflated?
Thanks for all the help,

Robert, do you know how the .375 compares to the .444 Marlin ballistically? If you own one do you need the other? Would I duplicate ballistics?
Thanks,

...when both cartridges are handloaded, I believe the 444 Marlin has a pretty substantial edge on the 375... this thread caught my eye because I'm in the market for a Marlin in 375 right now. I think when handloaded to its full potential, it is an excellent medium bore... should be much better than the 30-30 class of cartridges. There's a good article by Paco Kelley about this cartridge at Sixgunner.com ........ I think that 500 dollars is somewhat high for even a NIB Winchester... I would think more along the lines of 425-450 tops.... Used ones are listed in Gun List for under 300....just not very many of them.... I missed a Marlin for 250...wasn't fast enough in my response. There is a used Winchester for 250 also...

Boltaction, sounds like it's a fair price, not a great deal, but fair. As said earlier, it is great mid-range gun for deer, baer, elk, and moose. Ammo can still be found for it, and if you reload you can really tailor your rounds to what the gun likes. The .444 Marlin has a very slight edge in velocity, but when handloaded the will close this gap.

Does the comparison between the .375 Winchester and the .444 Marlin mean that there is virtually NO difference between them in the field?

No...not in my opinion.... the 444 will shoot a larger diameter, heavier bullet at an equal or higher velocity... it's a more powerful cartridge....sort of like comparing a heavy loaded 44 mag to a heavy loaded 41 mag... both are good, the 44 is more powerful.
