A friend of mine who was an accomplished skeet shooter wouldn't allow his sons to have a 410. He believed that it just frustrates a kid when he can't hit anything with it. He waited till his boys were old enough to handle a 12 gauge before letting them shoot skeet or hunt.

My boy had a hard time shooting the 410 and we switched him to a 20 guage. The 20 seemed to kick less than the 410. I plan to start both of my daughters (10 year oldand 3 month old ) on 20 guages.

Your Sons first gun? Keep it for him. I have my first gun that I got in 1966 when I was 11, it's a .410 single shot. I'm glad I have it. He will be too.

I'd have to agree. Mine was given to me in '82. My son will probably learn to shoot with it. As stated earlier, a 20 gauge is probably a much better choice for a kid's first hunting gun. My personal choice would probably be a youth model auto loaded one shell at a time for safety. The .410 I have still holds a special place in my memory. My first target was a pile of dead snakes after a tornado cleanup.

I would consider keeping it around incase you ever go shooting with someone that has a wife, girlfriend, daughter or young kid that may be recoil sensitive. They are sort of tricky to hunt effectively with, especially with a tight choke. However for plinking and just letting someone put some lead downrange they are a ton of fun. Other than the expense of the shells.

I have one of the winchester 9410's and my girlfriend likes shooting it more than her remington SPR 20 gauge. She doesn't really hunt though, just mostly plinking and stuff.

My dad has the same gun and he uses it for squirrels in his yard. Said he hasn't touched his 20 ga SxS or .22 since he got it.

.410s are my favorite. got two singles H&R's , one full choke and one mod.

went through 2 remington 870's. they were junk, didn't cycle smooth at all. shaved plastic off the hulls and hung up every time. took first one back to where i bought it and exchanged it for another. sent that one back to reminton twice. ended up selling it and bought a Browning BPS .410. got choke tubes F, M,IC and i bought a XF briley for tem high squirrels. haven't shot it yet.

Use 6's for rabbits and squirrels, and 8's for more challenging skeet shooting.
