Any quality bolt-action rifle in .270 Win. caliber is a good overall or multipurpose rifle. The Savage is certainly one of these. They have a reputation for accuracy. If you like wood stocks, make sure you get a WALNUT one, not some gumwoodor beech contraption.....

I wasnt saying Savge isnt a good rifel. Savage makes great rifle but they are a little rough for my liking. I got my little bro a Savage in 30-06 about 2 years ago. Its a very accurate rifle. Alot more accurate then my Remington 700 in 30-06 was or my dads Remington 7600 in 30-06.

Retaks, can you tell me a little bit more about what you mean when you say "rough for my liking"? Is it the roughness of the Savagebolt action or the whole gun? Also, speaking in general, would it besafe to say that stock Savage rifles are more accurate that Remington rifles. One more thing;can you shed a little light on free floating barrel and button rifleing. I ask this because I believe Savage rifles have both.

Its just the rough look of the rifle. Ive never found one that wont work well for hunting but i like to have a littel nicer looking gun. I wouldnt say its safe to say they are more accurate but they are accurate rifles. Ive seen some Remingtons that can out shoot my lil bros Savage. I dont know waht button rifling is but im sure someone on here can tell you what that is. As for Free Floating the barrel means that the barrel dose not make contact with the stock which usually makes for more accuracy because when the barrel get warm it dosnt have any pressure from the stock changing the POI. There is nothing wrong with the way a Savage shoots at all. I just like a little nicer looking rifle.

Retaks, what you have said is a majorconcern of mine. Sure, I would like to have a good looking rifle, but my main concern is one that will be reliable and accurate. Please don't take this the wrong way, but rifles are kinda like women - good looks are wonderful, but dependability, honestly and long term reliability are much more important. Would you agree? Taking this in to consideration, what rifle would you recommend?

I understand what you mean. A Savage is a good reliable rifle. Anything from Savage(Stevens Model 200 is a Savage 110 but a little cheaper price), Remington, Ruger, Tikka you will be able to get in your price range and will be a good reliable gun. And you will have enough money left over for a good to exelent scope for it. Just stay away from the Remington 710 and 770 model rifles. The Remington 700 are great rifles though.

Out of the box it is hard to beat the accuracy of a Savage.

Reliability and dependability, I would rate the Savage rifle at the bottom. They have chronic magazine problems. And poor quality plastic stock material in general(I know you said wood model).

The Savage rifle is what it is. It is an inexpensive rifle for a beginner hunter, or a hunter that does not shoot their rifle more than 10 or 20 times a year, but yet wants an accurate rifle.

I know I am going to get flamed for this, but the truth is the truth. I sold firearms for years. The vast majority of my returns were Savage rifles, and I sold more Remington's than I sold Savage.

Just remember one thing. I have never met a hunter or shooter who aspires to own a Savage!!!

I believe the accolades that are being put on the Savage's today are for their Varmint and Target style rifles. And I believe they deserve a lot of those accolades. However you are not looking at a target style rifle, and the target style rifles are not cheap.

If you do not believe the things I am saying here then talk to your local gunsmith, and ask him which rifle he works on the most. Andalso look at how a rifle holds it's value. You can buy a 20 year old Savage for the same price it was 20 years ago. Try and buy a 700 Remington or a Winchester Model 70 for the same price.

I have a Savage targe rifle at the gunsmith right now having the magazine fixed, and I use a follower!!! Tom.

If it works, who gives a rat's a$$? if you wanna blow a grand on a deer rifle, have at it. Does it make you a better shooter? NO do you think I care how much nicer your rifles are? NO. I have been shooting Savage rifles for 15 years, never encountered any of the problems you mentioned, and I do a lot of shooting. Sounds to me like you are making a generalization about the Savage brand in general. Someone using a Savage must've outshot your Remington at the range, sounds like sour grapes to me.

Guys, by no means was it my intention to start an argument with this thread. Like I said, I am somewhat new to the high power rifles. To be honest, I've never (except for shotguns)owned acenterfire rifle. I've fired many, but never owned one. It is my intention to buyan exceptionalcenterfireriflein the very near future. I want one that isextremely reliable, will last a LONG time, looks good, and for sure is SUPER accurate. If Ineed to take it to the gunsmith and get someminormodifications, that fine. This isa gun that I will keep forever and eventually pass on. It is my intention to mount this rifle with a very good high power scope. And...yes, the majority of my shooting will be at targets. I'll need to break it in, get comfortable with shooting it, and become as accurate as possible beforehunting. I've been looking real close at this gun http://www.savagearms.com/114Classic.htm

Thisis a classic Model 114 Savage in walnut stock, and Savage is known for its accuracy. From all the info I have gathered, I'm going to get either a 270 or 30-06. These two calibers seem to be thebest for anoverall gun. Being somewhat shy of recoil, I'm leaning toward the 270. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the 270 kicks a little less than the 30-06 Although, an 06 with light loads will probably kick less than any 270 load. This concern is one of the many reasons I joined the huntingnet.com message board. I'm here to learn some things abouthigh power rifles before makingmy purchace.I'm not too concerned about my initial investment. I just want the best I can buy before adding customization,scope...andall of the othercosts that come with shooting my rifle. If you guys have any input please let me know. I'm open to personal e-mails too. My address is [email protected]
