Best Overall Rifle

Best Overall Rifle
I'm looking at a Savage 114 Classic in 270 cal. Would you guys recommend this gun as one of the better overall multipurpose rifles? I would like to get a real wood stock and put an excellent scope on the gun. Price isn't too much of a concern, but I'd like to keep it under 1000. I've heard that Savage is one of the more accurate. I'll probably go deer and hog hunting...although most of the shooting with be target at 100 to 200 yards.

You could get a better looking rifle for under $1000. Other then that Savage makes good rifles. They are accurate. 270 is a great cartridge also. If i was you i would look at either a Tikka T3 or a Ruger M77 Hawkeye in 270, 30-06, or 308. As for a good scope Nikon makes good scopes for decent prices. I got a Tikka T3 Lite Stainless in 300 WSMand a Silver 3x-9x Nikon Buckmasters scope for right around $800.

Retaks, for the most part I'm new to the high power rifles. All I've ever owned are 22lrs and 22 mags. I recently got a 22 mag Savage and it's damn near a tack driver right out of the box with a 3 x 9 Bushnell. This 22 mag amazed me, and that's why I'm leaning toward the 270 or 30-06Savage. The Classic model 114 is a very good-looking gun in walnut.
Let me know what you think. I'm in no hurry, and the gun I get will be a keeper.

It should be a fine firearm, and I sure it will be plenty accurate. Here is a post of a very nice looking Savage.

Dean, since you already have such good history and feeling for Savages, I'd be inclined to stay with them. A lot of shooting is the mystical touchy/feely relationship between a man and his rifle. It seems like if you believe in each other, goods things will follow. Or so it's been for me.
Anyway, I've spent most of my shooting life with th 30/06 and I have nothing but superlative things to say about it...best all around...most versatile...yadda, yadda, yadda. But the last ten years I've had a Model 70 in 270 that I love more each time I go out with it. Part of me would feel like a traitor to even suggest you go with 270 over 30/06. So I won't do it. But I will promise you that you won't go wrong with either choice. Both belong to the best of the best. Unless you plan on going after the big bears sometime soon in your life, I wouldn't seriously even consider any other cartridge...even though they are not the new, flashy kids in the gunstore any longer. When you boil off the advertising hype the old /06 and 270 are still as good as and mostly better than anything in their class. You'll never roam alone carrying either rifle.
Good hunting.
