Favorite weapon?
Most of the people here have lots, or at least more than one gun or weapon. What is your favorite? It is tough, but I think my favorite gun, is my cheap Norinco SKS. It isn’t the most powerful, most accurate, or most anything for that matter. But it sure is fun to shoot and cool to hunt with. I’ve found that I prefer iron sights. To me it seems more like reality. A scope takes something away from the experience, almost as if I’m watching a movie instead of being there. I used to carry my SKS when it was foggy or damp and I didn’t want to have a fogged up scope on my 700. Then I found that I was happy that it was foggy, rainy or snowy so that I could carry it. Finally I liberated myself and decided to make it my primary rifle, simply because I like it. It is all about the enjoyment, right? Don’t get me wrong; I like having and carrying lots of weapons, from a bow to a high power rifle or shot-gun. Just a fondness for the SKS. What are some of your favorites? And why? |
RE: Favorite weapon?
I really enjoy my Remington 870 Wingmaster.
Simple gun and many people have them, but I have a few reasons of liking it. 1. Given to me by my grandfather. 2. You can hunt literally anything with it. I harvested my first small game, large game, waterfowl, and predator animals with it. 3. Ammunition is cheap, and easily reloadable. 4.What more could you ask for? |
RE: Favorite weapon?
Aside from my bow, my Remington 700 7mm Mag. was my favorite. I took my first deer and acually all of my deer with it. I haven't been up state at deer camp wererifles arestill legal for years now but last four years I was there I carried only my Ruger Super Red Hawk. I carried it for deer andbear hunting. I was never futunate enough to get a shot but I lovedto carry that gun and it was a dream of mine to take a buck with it.It still is.

RE: Favorite weapon?
My favorite weapon is my bow...Mathews switchback XT... Love it and would give up gun hunting tomorrow for bowhunting...
Having said that... I do love my guns... and I only really use them for hunting and nothing else... I love them all! |
RE: Favorite weapon?
I prefer my Browning BAR308. It was my dads first high-powered rifle about 32 years ago and it has standed the test of time for both of us. He gave me the rifle about 10 years ago and replaced it with a new BAR 308, which i have now too (He upgraded to a A-bolt 300WSM). I have had other brands of rifles but none of them even came close to the quality of the Belgium-made Browning, which is why i still shoot it. It is not the most beautiful gun i own either, the stock is scratched terribly but the safari engravings are still nice. My dad had killed over 100 bucks with the rifle, so it adds to the mystique of hunting with it and has alot of value to me and the rest of my family. After all those years it still will empty a clip pretty quickly too!

RE: Favorite weapon?
Wow that's a tough question for me. I have many guns all have a story and all are close to my heart but it would come down to three and for good reason.
1. The Winchester 20ga. single shot my dad gave be at 15. His dad gave it to him at 16 and it will continue to be passed down for years to come. It looks like crap now but I plan on getting it reblued and sanding and staining the stock again to restore it to its former glory. 2. Then there is the Marlin 30-30 he gave me at 17. We didn't have alot of money but my dad sacrificed alot to get it for me brand new. He wasn't into hunting but he saw the passion in me and that is what really got me into the sport. It was used to kill my first deer and many more after that plus it will blow an armadillo clean in two. 3. Is the Ruger 10/22 my fiance gave me for Christmas this last year she wanted to give me something that would make me remember this year forever. This gun hasn't had the chance for a lot of memories yet but soon I think it will be my favorite just like her. |

RE: Favorite weapon?
I have 2 870's. One I bought over 30 years ago is a 2 3/4 inch Wingmaster. When I started deer hunting I got a rifle sighted rifled barrel for it. About 10 to 15 years ago I got an 870 Express combo. It has a smooth bore, rifle sight barrel. I saw it displayed at a gun show by a dealer who had several of them, all new with boxes. One stood out as it had a walnut stock instead of the stained birch. I do not like the look of the birch stocks at all so I got the gun. My two boys were getting to be the age where they needed something to shoot too and I wanted something to shoot 3" waterfowl loads.
The Express has mellowed over the years the way walnut stocked guns do. I have confidence with that gun and I like the way it looks. The Wingmaster is just a gun to me, go figure. I think part of it is the looks and part of it is because of the success I've had deer hunting with the Express. Both of my sons would rather shoot the Wingmaster. To them it is pop's gun, and it has the more polished finish. My older boy can shoot the eyes out of a snake with it too. Of course my great grandpa's sporter M1861 Springfield musket (now shotgun) is right up there. He probably got it from Sears or Wards back in the late 1800's. I'm taking it with me the next time I go rabbit hunting, I don't like having a gun that I've never killed anything with. The gun had a powder charge in it when my grandpa gave it to my dad back about 1967. It kicks like a mule with light loads because the whole gun is so light. This gun does not have much monetary value and old grandaddy probably only gave around $2 for it but it has been in the family for 120 years or so and was used regularly till the late 1940's. Bob |
RE: Favorite weapon?
Probably have to say my very first gun.......my Remington 870
|
RE: Favorite weapon?
I only own one centerfire...A 1980 Ruger M-77 in .243 with a Leupold VX-II 3x9x40, for whitetails it's all I need...
My bow is a 1994? vintage Mountaineer, I've killed at least 40 deer with it and I love it...I don't use a release, still shoot fingers so most of the current bows are too short, guess I'll keep it until it breaks... But my favorite deer weapon is a .54 caliber flintock that I finished in 1990...It gives me more range than the bow and it's more challenging than a modern centerfire...:D ![]() |
RE: Favorite weapon?
Too tough just to name one.. So I will group them. :D
1. Shotguns 3 Browning Citoris - A 410 and a 28 that my dad had custome engraved and a 28 that he gave to me when I was 8. They are all over 25 years old now.. 2. Rifles - Weatherby 243 that I got when I was 13. Mohawk 6mm I just got from my Uncle 3. Pistol - Charter Arms 38 undercover my Dad carried on his hip for 30 years. |
RE: Favorite weapon?
My favorite weapon-boy that is easy. My Girl Friend. She is a real killer.
Great shot Ridge Runner. I am pretty sure there is something else in that picture that you are more proud of(Hint: not the dog). Tom. |
RE: Favorite weapon?
My model 70 carbine, in .308. Winchester caliber in a winchester rifle. One of the most popular, versatile and accurate cartriges ever. My rifle is probably around 35 years old, has been used alot and shows it, but it shoots straight and works perfectly. It wears a Simmons whitetail classic in 1.5 x 5 x 20.A fairly cheap scope and I've had some issues with it but they are resolved. A sweet rig that I have utmost confidence in and never intend to part with. I've made about a dozen one shot kills with it. I use 150 gr core locks.

RE: Favorite weapon?
Mine would be a Ruger Super Blackhawk Convertible. Stainless gun, polished, 4 5/8 barrel, has 2 cylinders, 1 for .45ACP and 1 for .45Colt. My grandfather bought it for me before he died of cancer over a year ago, it is very special to me.

For me here in northeast Ohio I like my inline muzzleloader topped with a 2-5 wide angle scope,209 primer and triple 7 pushing a 223 gr. power belt. It's a lot af fun to shoot, easy to clean and wicked on deer.

RE: Favorite weapon?
Really all of them, but my Winchester Model 70 in .30-06 might be my favorite.I bought it in my early 20's. I replacedthestock with ahogue stock that is fully beddedin aircraft grade aluminum and mecahanically and chemically bonded to 'Hogue" rubber. The barrel is free floating. it shoots 1 MOA. The .30-06 is a great all around cartriage with minimal recoil. My last two rifles I bought, I topped with a Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14 x44mm (awesome). I plan to put a Zeiss 3.5-10 x 44mm on my Win 70 for this fall.

RE: Favorite weapon?
My favorite pistol is my Smith & Wesson 41 Mag, Classic Hunter. I've owned every pistol from the 44 mag on down and nothing works as well for me as the .41. It's not about muzzle energy. It about being able to deliver the goods on target consistently out to ridiculous pistol ranges.
My favorite all time rifle would have to be a Winchester Model 43, chambered for 22 K Hornet. This little devil probably killed more varmints for me than anything I've ever used. Out to 200 yds, it was simply a death ray. On the rare occasions that I missed, this cartridge made so little noise that very often the varmints didn't realize they were being shot at and they stood around or ran very little. Hardly any survived my second try. |

RE: Favorite weapon?
Mine would be a Remington Model 600 in .308 my dad got me when I was 14 (I'm 57 now). I've shot 4 elk and numerous deer with it here in the Northwest. I've hunted with other rifles, bows, muzzleloaders, but I always remember the way animals seemed to walk out in front of that rifle. I still have it, although I haven't hunted with it for many years (I didn't hunt for many years as I followed my job around the country). I plan on familiarizing myself with the peep sight I put on again and hitting the brush in this years season.

![]() ![]() ![]() Same old trap.... Favorite rifle.... it all depends upon the job at hand.... fit the tool(s) to the job, then pick the favorite tool.... for me, there ain't one: Most rim fire plinking fun.... probably a Ruger 10/22. Most centerfire plinking fun.... AR-15 in .223 Centerfire target shooting.... .308 Favorite big game rifle (big game I've hunted anyway).... Model 70 in 375H&H Biggest rush.... Barrett 50BMG Deer and antelope and lesser game....338WinMag was the most FUN and my favorite tho plenty fell to my 270Win.... Coyotes, prairie dogs, etc. 6mm with an Inertl scope. |
RE: Favorite weapon?
My favorite is my very first centerfire. Its a 1903 Steyr Mannlicher with rotary magazine in 7X57 mauser. Veryslim stock, express sights, still has the big ball military bolt handle... easy to work in the winter ...and still has the old military 3 position saftey at the aft of the bolt.
It is the smoothest bolt action I have ever worked and even with the iron sights I can still keep it on the center 4 inches of my target at 80 yards. Took my first deer with it and hope to use it on my last. |
RE: Favorite weapon?
My 10 guage Remington SP-10 Magnum is my favorite. I like it so much that in addition to waterfowl and turkey, I use it for hunting game that it is probably not considered ideal for such as pheasant and rabbits. I have even taken it on a wild boar hunt using Federal1 3/4 oz. (750 grain) rifled slugs in 3.5 inch magnum shells.

RE: Favorite weapon?
Californiadoctor that thing sounds like a cannon, i bet that 1 3/4 slug hits like a truck.
As for the subject of the post, i have a couple fav guns. My first would be my youth remington 870 that my father got for me to start hunting back when i was 10 or 11, that i used to take a handful of turkey and a bunch of rabbits and squirrels. Second would be my father's Model 70 7mm Remington Magnum. He got it back in like the 70's well before i was born and it is an absolute war horse. It's fancy custom stock has all the scars and nicks of a rifle that has been to hell and back. It has been responsible for a couple bear, a couple mulies and piles of whitetail. The action is just as slick as you please and it still throws nice groups. I kind of took it over a couple years ago when my father took me and my brother to Montana for a mule deer/elk hunt with my uncle who lives out there. In a way it felt kind of like the passing of the torch to get to use the "7 mag", the one that i had been hearing about in hunting stories since i was a little kid. It is really heavy with that custom stock but that heft felt real reassuring over my shoulder and on the first morning of the hunt i got a nice 30 inch 6x6 Mulie with it. I have carried it deer hunting back in NY ever since and although it is more gun then you need for our whitetails, that heft still feels reassuring over my shoulder and its still neat to be hunting with Dad's "7 Mag" |
