Now get a Ruger MKII or MKIII semi-auto handgun and put a red dot scope on it. I have killed many of ground squirrel and rabbits out to 80yds. with it using Winchester Power Points. I had a leather hip holster made for my Ruger Side Slab with the Millet red dot scope. That way you can carry the shotgun too.

i might get a .22 magnum also now. i change my plans a lot......lol

i just read an artticle in fur fish and game that said .22 magnums are good for squirrel........any thoughts?

why a semi? a good bolt action is better for hunting. more accurate. ruger, remington, browning, all make fine rifles. you dont say what state you are in. some states like Pa dont allow semi rifles for hunting. make sure they are legal in what state you are in.

Like others have said, you can't go wrong with the 10/22. Has plenty of stopping power for smaller animals, good dependibility, and good accuracy.

10/22s are great, marlin makes some great 22s also-for a lot cheaper

If you like the feel and style of the 10/22, dont hesitate. This is by far one of the best .22 rifles for the money. Deff enough kill power for small game, can be decked out to look like anything from a big game rifle to a compact bull pup military rifle...great in stock form too You and i have talked alot about this lil gun lately...you wont be disappointed if you like this gun. I use mine for gray squirral in central FL. and have used it on larger game as in bobcats. Lord knows the tree rats here are not big at all...i cant rip one at 100 yrds when combined with a good quality scope. GOOD LUCK!
