Default short mags or reg mags?

who prefers the short action mags over reg mags a friend of mine is going on a elk hunt this fall and doesn't want to take his 308 he wants to get a mag either the 7mm saum or 7mm rem. mag I told him I'd get the 7mm rem mag because it has more bullet selection did I do the right thing also do you think the short actions is here to stay or will they fade away? thanks for your help.

Either will work just fine. Don't forget the WSM line of cartridges, with the .270, 7mm and .300 WSM's being really nice, as well.

I prefer the 7mmrem mag as it has the best ballistics and will be around for a long time while some of the short mags may fade away in time.

If I already had a long Mag I would not switch. If I were buying a new mag then I would go with the short mag. My choice of all of them is the 270 WSM. Pretty light recoil but a 200-250 fps gain over the standard version. Your friends 308 will work fine for elk as well. A friend of mine borrowed my 260 Rem with 140 grain Barnes X bullets and took a very nice bull elk in Wyoming last fall. I charged him some elk steaks for rent. He broke the elks shoulder and as they always do, the X bullet exited the far side.

I have had my 7mm rem. mag for years and had bought it because I was impressed with the ballistics. I have taken animals down from 20 feet to 400 yards. This caliber will be with me for years. I'm not saying the other calibers aren't good , I'm just putting in my 2 cents.

I like the WSM's...non belted and short action. gg

I have no use whatsoever for a short magnum. My 7mm-08 will handle anything I want to shoot within 300 yards and the 300 Win Mag will go longer and take bigger.

The Elk will not notice a anthill 0f difference between a 7 SAUM,7 WSM,7rem mag,300win mag or 300 WSM. Let him pick his poison. Just Remember friends don't let friends buy Remingtons...
