I don't think it is the cartridge so much as the gun. The Winchester and Marlin lever action stocks are about the worst you can get for recoil. I shoot a hot loaded 45-70 out of an H&R that should be pushing about the same as a 450 Mar and I can do it all day. I'm a little sore afterwards but if I go to the range and come back without a little soreness I feel like I haven't even been.

Quilly,
I use my 45-70 with the winchester factory 300 JHP. The recoil on it isn't bad at all, and that round will put any deer/black bear down hard out to 200 yds. And you can always buy the premium ammo when hunting larger animals.

If I were you, i'd either trade for a 45-70 or look at a pachmayer decelerator pad. The people on the Marlin Talk forum swear by them on their 450's and hot loaded 45-70's.

I got a 450 Marlin in the 1871Ultra Rifle, load 300gr jhp to max load. It kicks just aliitle harder than a 30-06 and less than my 300Weatherby Mag in a Mark-5. Zeak

i figured it would be up there. i was afraid to use it in my tree stand due to shouldering it in weird angle shots. i really don't shoot her as much as when i first bought it.

my buddy does have a 45-70 marlin ( non ported ) and he uses win 300gr. JHP. it does kick almost like the 450marlin but less sharpness to it.
i knew she was gonna kick and i will be only using it in the future on bear hunts. i would like to see how she does on black bear in maine. the real problem i did have before i decided to go with a peep was looking for a good scope with long eye relief and one that would not loose it's zero.
