Quilly, I owned a 45-70 for several years to hunt hogs. I weigh about 155 lbs. and had to sell the gun because of recoil. I cut my eye two times at the shooting range and flinched every time I shot more than three shots. I am use to the recoil of guns and have owned many makes and sizes. The 450 has more kick than the 45-70. I believe with a muzzle break and good recoil pad the gun should be manageable for a person 180 - 200 lbs.

I have a .45/70 load using the Barnes Original 400-grain semispitzer @ 2270 FPS @ 15' from the muzzle (Ruger No. 1.) I have to loop my left index finger over the barrel in front of the scope when shooting it from the bench to keep it from jumping off the shooting bag. Leupold is the only brand of scope I have tried on this rig that isn't disassembled by recoil after two or three rounds. Needless to say, I have settled on a much milder load for general hunting and target shooting with this rig. But, were I to go after moose or Kodiak bear with this rifle, I would use this load. It shoots three shots into one ragged hole @ 100 yards. Three shots is about all I can stand to shoot at any one range session....(recoil is in the 55 Ft.Lb. range)!!!

A lot of people enjoy shooting heavy recoiling firearms. They take more skill to shoot accurately.

For a non-handloader, is there any reason to buy the 450 Marlin, as the 45-70 has both hot and moderate loadings available? Seems to me the 450 is going to beat you up unless you can make some moderate handloads for practice/deer hunt. On the marlin site, everyone recommends the 450 if you don't handload, but aren't there hot loads for the 45-70 commercially available?? What am I missing, I am very interested in getting one or the other in a guide gun.....
