RE: .22 rifle reccomendations
I have seenSavage 93F's and FV's 22 WRMon sale at Dic*s sporting good in the past, priced well below $200, like $150 for the F and $180 for the FV. You tokeep a look for them when they go on sale. The Savage's are just plain awesome shooters, no frills, no bells and whistles, just great shooting rifles.

RE: .22 rifle reccomendations
In your situation,I would choose .22mag over .17hmr for following reasons. We had a lot of coyotes run off to die later when solidly shot with .17hmr. It's just too small to RELIABLY put yotes down instantly. At 100-150 yards, the .22mag clearly kills bigger varmits quicker. Sure, they can be killed, but some will run off.
On small edible game, the .17hmr is just too destructive on everything but headshot. You can however use .22mag fmj bullets to reproduce .22Lr hp bullet results.
