So, where do you shoot them at? If not the point of the shoulder, then right behind the shoulder (deer shot)?

I hunt whitetails primarily with a 300 rum. I chose this round for its accuracy and energy. Could I use a smaller caliber? Sure. But practicing during the off season is so much more fun with the big bruiser. In years past, I used everything from a 270 to a 223. A 30-30 is great for 150 yards and under. It's also easier to tote through the woods than my heavy magnum. The little levergun is also quicker to shoot. The majority of the hunting I do nowadays is over large fields. It's all about matching the gun to the conditions and not shooting such a large round that it teaches you to flinch.

Overgunned is not the issue. The real issue is are we under-practiced and/or under-informed? Proper bullet construction along with adequate/proper velocity combined with good bullet placement is what kills game. Not velocity or bore size. A big hole can help, but is not the critical point.

Jack was wrong. Personally, I like being overgunned. You can never have enough gun. I hunt Sitka deer with a 375 H&H.

seattlesetters, sure the 270 Win. is a great cartridge and got all of its fame from Jack, but would you hunt, like, brown bear with it? Sit there and whiz those 150 grain bullets all around? No, thanks! I'll take a mag with authority for an animal like that, especially one that can bite back or turn you into a pile of crap the following day.

If I hunted in an area where 90% of the big game weighed less than 200 lbs. then yeah, the 270 Win. would be in my safe, but where I live, I have no use for that cartridge.

God Bless you Bear, you're in the minority but you're a good man none the less. Let's see here, two questions..... (1)Jack O'Connor: If you're tough enough and like magnums then Jack was wrong and if you're tender and don't like them then Jack was right. (2) Overgunned? It's not me that's on the business end of the rifle, it's the game that gets overgunned -- and judging by their actions they probably think it works just a little "too well".

Technology marches on.......

Circa 1830---
Jed, did you hear about the percussion caps? They are way better than our flintlocks, quicker, more reliable, and hotter burning!
Nonsense son, newfangled contraptions, no one should ever need more than a flintlock!

Circa 1866---
Cecil, did you hear that them yankee gun manufacturers have invented this thing called a "cartridge" - no more fooling with percussion caps - no more measuring out powder - no more pushing bullets down the bore!
Nonsense son, newfangled contraptions, no one should ever need more than the ole civil war musket! What's the world coming to?

Circa 1876---
General Custer, we should take them injuns more serious, reports say there could be thousands and many of them are armed with repeating rifles!
Nonsense son, our trap door springfields are the most accurate rifle available, repeaters -- hell if we could win the Great Civil War with muskets, we'll make short work of any indians with our Springfields!

Circa 1911---
Wyatt, here's my Christmas present for you dear! What the hell is this? A 30-06? What kind of a name is that for a cartridge? I've heard about these, people thinking they can shoot game at 200 yards!
Nonsense - overpowered, too noisy, kicks too much, I'm not hunting elephants in Africa you know!- Charlotte what was you thinking? You know I am a 44-40 man! It was good enough for my daddy and its good enough for me! Take it back to the store!

Circa 1958---
Mr. Weatherby, I'm afraid the bank will not be able to provide you a loan to gear up for these new fangled, overpowered rifles. You know I happen to be a hunter myself and my father taught me a thing or two about hunting and well, simply put....
Nonsense - Mr. Weatherby, no one will want them or need them and you won't be able to sell them! Loan denied!

Circa 1991---
Saddam, you should not take the Americans lightly -- this could be a disaster. Rashad, listen to me -- the Americans have no confidence, they are still unsure after their experience in Vietnam -- invade Kuwait! But Saddam, these are not the Iranians - the Americans have new technologies, we can't.... Rashad, listen to me, INVADE, the Americans so called technology is a dream, it is no match for our experienced battle hardened troops!

I will not let this stand! Collin, Norman take anything you need and clean them out! But, sir, what about world opinion that we may perceived as being heavy handed, a bully, and going a bit, well, "overgunned" sir?
Nonsense! I say clean them out! Sir, we're cleared to use anything we need sir? Anything! Can we use the big guns this time, sir? Yes, boys use the big guns this time. Listen boys, I want to use "overwhelming, vastly superior force, no screwing around this time - Do you understand?" Yes, sir a 100 hours ought to about do it, sir! Well get cracking then![A little off target, but very relevent to current events! What do you think? Should we lighten up and NOT go in so 'overgunned' this time versus 1991?]

Circa 2003---
Dad, I read we may be overgunned using this kind of rifle on deer.... Son, have you been on the internet again? Yes, dad.... Son, just you watch, its the deer that is about to be overgunned not us! Kar-booooom! Wow - What A Slap Down! When can I go with you to Alaska? Son, when you've got some hunts under your belt and you can handle one of these then you can go with me to Alaska.

Circa 2011---
(The son): Why was I even concerned about it? It felt great "overgunning" this brown bear, put him right down! Practicing on the deer and elk really helped! Dad and the guide look proud! Hey Dad, Africa next?
-------------------

Just a funny little walk through &quot;history&quot;, good thing I didn't find this thread earlier, I might have taken it all much too seriously.<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

Technology does march on though, often to the dismay of many!

Never Undergunned,
EKM

Good judgment comes from bad experience! Half of elk hunting is knowing what NOT to do!
